CSE 2022: Plan/ Strategy/ Daily Routine

This is an everything thread for all stuff 2022. You can post your daily goals, end-of-the-day updates, weekly targets or any weird thing you use to measure your progress. You can put into words & post the soul-sucking sadness that is threatening to devour you & your productivity. You can write what made your day & let others experience the happiness too, at least vicariously. This is a thread to pick each other up. This is a thread to keep each other accountable. This is a no-judgement zone.

--------

“This is one more piece of advice I have for you: don't get impatient. Even if things are so tangled up you can't do anything, don't get desperate or blow a fuse and start yanking on one particular thread before it's ready to come undone. You have to realize it's going to be a long process and that you'll work on things slowly, one at a time.”

PYQ 2021:

Which of the following have species that can establish symbiotic relationship with other organisms? 1. Cnidarians 2. Fungi 3. Protozoa

Select the correct answer using the code given below. (a) 1 and 2 only (b) 2 and 3 only (c) 1 and 3 only (d) 1, 2 and 3

All coachings, googling gave answer (d)-1,2,3. But, NCERT Class 11 Biology (Chap-2, Pg-21) book says as follows:

"All protozoans are heterotrophs and live as predators or parasites."

Nothing could be as clear as this statement, which means  they cannot be symbiotic.  UPSC almost always goes by traditional, official, authoritative books like NCERT rather than googling/wiki/research papers. So, I think answer should be (A)-1 and 2 only. What do you guys think?

Symbiosis is not just mutualism where both organisms benefit (like in lichens). It includes commensalism, amensalism, parasitism etc as well. Basically, any type of a close + long-term biological interaction= symbiotic relationship.

Reference: PYQ 2021-"Protozoa forms symbiotic relationship".

Biology NCERT class 11, chap-2, pg-21 says "All protozoans are predators or parasites"

I always thought Symbiotic relationship means "mutualistic" . Does anyone know if in any NCERT they have clearly told that symbiotic relationship means parasitism, commensalism, amensalism also (as wiki says). It is available on google but UPSC doesn't stick to google if the statement is available in NCERT. Also, wiki para says it is a century old debate if symbiosis means only mutualism or not. If it that old a debate, then UPSC will certainly stick to NCERT. Hence, if anyone can give me NCERT reference of symbiotic being parasitism also I would be greatly obliged. Otherwise we will have to stick to NCERT, no matter how many research papers have come on google.

@Steph_Curry Thanks, I have rephrased the question. What symbiotic relationship actually means, we need to go to that. If you have NCERT reference please provide it. Even wiki para says it is a century old debate. In debate questions i think upsc sticks to NCERT

@jassikamboj16303 Official key should be out soon. NCERT doesn't discuss symbiotic relationships adequately. There's one definition in class 7 and that's it.

@hashtag2020 I don't think answer key will be released before 5 june as IFoS interviews are till 23 june and UPSC will release prelim answer key after final declaration of IFoS result. Then, it wont matter. So, we will have to figure it out by ourselves only.
As for NCERT definition, you are right even I found it to be inadequate in that class 7 book. But whatever is written there and the examples given, I figured it talks only about Mutualistic ones. I know it might seem very trivial, but I have a strong hunch since none of the sources on google are actually authoritative or official, coupled with the fact it is an "age old debate" as wiki said. Maybe some Bipin Chandra counterparts in ecology can help with authoritative source.

Symbiosis means to live together.

Sym- Together

Bios- Life

Two species could live together in any of the following manner- mutualism, commensalism, amensalism, parasitism etc. So, it is an umbrella term!

@AzadHindFauz Yes I understand these meanings. And it seems very logical. But as I mentioned earlier, even wiki says there was a centuries old big debate about symbiotic being only mutualistic. So I like to think, it is not as simple as it sounds, like you mentioned. Symbiotic, as I have understood since school and many examples given, is mutual benefit. It is only very recently (like 1-2 years) that people have started saying that parasites are also symbionts. I may be completely wrong, but I would still like to see sources mentioning this.
However, if you do find any authoritative source mentioning this I would concede your point. By authoritative I mean something like NCERT, or Bipin Chandra types in ecology (who is bipin chandra of ecology? no idea).

How do you guys remember "contemporary type" questions in ancient, medieval history. Do you actually remember the dates or is there a story linking two events. Like that Iltutmish-Chengiz khan-Tughlaq-Timur type questions. They completely bamboozle me, no matter how much i try to remember their actual dates. Complicate this with Bhakti Sufi saints and it becomes unfathomable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@jassikamboj16303 this map is from New Ncert, if I am not wrong. Try to cram it , if possible.
I would personally suggest not to fret over it, because hardly 1 question will come, so rather focus on revising other things.
However, if you can cram this, then well and good.
