Mains 2021 Result declared - In or Out?

Does anyone has Civil engineering as Optional? How was your paper this year?
4.2k views
@King_of_the_dead I didn't find civil paper easy.May be arts optionals got comparatively easier paper but I found it tougher than other years .
Paper 1 was easy but very lengthy. Moreover,as we attempt more, accuracy falls.
I too made silly mistakes in paper 1.Its common.
However, most surprising was paper 2.Part 1 was very tough.I can clearly say that this part 1 was toughest I have ever seen.Part 2 was as usual.
So overall paper 2 was tougher than other years.
Paper 1 as usual was very lengthy

@King_of_the_dead I hope there will be less scaling and lenient checking. If civil engineering papers r tough and others' easy then that means less scaling.

Both Conventional and unconventional questions can be made tough .They can ask tough questions from  these areas but No they want to go out of syllabus.
Most of the questions were not in books,IAS previous year, ESE previous years and IFoS one .

If u compare our highest marks with mechanical and electrical engineering, we always get 20 marks lesser and the culprit is Paper 2.
It becomes very tough.

I too gave it different  meanings. I dont know how UPSC will interpret.

Wrote only  2 3  pages on motherhood but then a included

America  as cradle of modern democracy and how it shaped the world order towards democracy and that is why it ruled/maintained  hegemony in the world

Then how during drafting of Univeral Declaration of  Human Rights, cradle of human rights, the words All men are born free equal was changed to All humans are born free equal by Indian delegate Ms Hansa Mehta. In this way she rocked the cradle of human rights by making it gender sensitive and such inclusiveness exists in UN now.

Then referred to Parliament as cradle of laws and how it affects society and rules in spirit of constitution.

Also referred to Gandhiji rocking cradle of independence through ideas of non violence and how it still shapes India's policy.

Then gave arguments on how hands r not able to rock cradle and not ruling the world.

High malnutrition anaemia among women

Lack infrastructure in schools hindering teachers

Farmers cradle of food security facing challenges

Then wrote about hands that build the cradle, cleans the cradle and keeps it safe. They too r important not just hands rocking the cradle

Then last argument was about how world should be ruled is more important than who rules the world. It must be ruled with values of justice and compassion.

@Sahilkumar If u have explained the words-
hands, rock the cradle, rules for each example, there wont be any problem. If it is so,it would be rewarded as points are unique.

@sjerngal On the surface, Gs 2 might look easy but it was indeed tough.Familiarity with topic is one thing while writing quality answers is another.
Anyways paper always looks easy to one who hasn't attempted it.

3.2k views
@Capedcrusader1 I am of opinion that case study part is also about Integrity  and Aptitude which checks decision making.Ethical jargon may not replace innovative solutions and rational decision making.
Writing them may or may not help but they r not the core of case studies.

I have Civil engineering optional. I  gave mains in 2018.Didnt have much prep back then.
I gave myself full marks for correct numerical,50 percent for correct theory questions and low marks for incorrect questions
I compared answers from Madeeasy book
I was getting 143 in paper 1
Actual score was 111 in p1
Similarly I was getting 167 in p2
Actual score 147 p2
So my net score of 310 gave me 258
However this was 2018.
If u compare in 2019 and 2020,I think they r multiplying score with maybe 0.9 again
258 is roughly equal to 235 of 2019 2020

Based on 2020 levels,
In my opinion if ur net score (Not attempt but final marks written on answer copy) is
400 u may get 330
375 will fetch u 300
350 will fetch u 275
325 will fetch 245
300 will fetch 215

@Admgenalanezh The examiner gives full marks but SCALING .
Scaling is necessary for level playing field in terms of marks.
However, there is no level playing field when it comes to effort that engineering science and maths optional demands.
More than 25 thick books
25 year compilation of IAS ESE Ifos
It's really too much
To get top marks may be equally tough in all subjects but even an average score in Maths/engineering requires lots of disproportionate effort vis a vis other subjects.

2.5k views
@Akkku Yes its rewarding.
Effort is very high but its more certain n objective.
Only Anthro scores cross Maths n engineering.
Top score of other optionals r generally lower.

You r right.
Nowadays the difference between top score Maths/engineering n other subjects r not much.
Top scores 2020
Maths 324
Anthro 320
Mechanical engineering 311
Civil engineering 287
Electrical too around 307

@Philip_Marlowe It is very different .
The syllabus covered in colleges is hardly 40 % of the optional syllabus of CSE.
Moreover, the focus of colleges is also on research rather than rote learning and numerical asked in CSE optional.
By that logic, GS syllabus of all arts student must be automatically completed as they graduate but we know it's not the case.
Likewise, syllabus/pedagogy in colleges is very different from cse exam

@EiChan Bhai Upinder Singh padhi hai maine.
Kai saari books padhi hai tumlog ke optional ki.
Intellectual to hai but at ek point ke baad sabhi optional me wahi  cheezein baar baar revise karni padti hai.Boring ho jaati hain saari Intellectual cheezein.
Need hai optional ka Kaun kitna ghis sakta hai
In my opinion, humanities optional mein one of the most lengthiest optional hai history.

2.7k views
@Philip_Marlowe This trend is also visible in my optional. This time in paper 2 ,around 80 marks was bouncer, nowhere in the books and there was no choice left but to attempt them.

Kuch subject me jyaada hai kuch me kam

Over the years, increase in toughness is visible across all papers but randomly some subjects r very tough in certain years.

It becomes a matter of luck then.
People will say ki scaling will take care of toughness of paper but its not justified.
In a very tough paper, the marks of toppers of that subject get reduced vis a vis other subjects.
Average marks will be same though.
If History or Geography of a particular year is too tough, eventually the topper of that subject suffer the most.

@krishna96 My take is that they give more marks.Imagine if 40% is highest marks for very good answers then how people got 115 in GS 1 121 in GS 2 108 in GS 3 131 in GS 4
And not just one but many have good  scores in these range.
It is difficult to believe that a topper writes very good answers  to all 20 Questions.
May be 7-8 very good answers 7-8 good answers 4-5 average answers.
However, what is good and what is average is subjective.

In my opinion they give 5-5.5 marks for exceptional answers 4-4.5 for good answers 3 3.5 for average and 1 2 for bad answers out of 10 marks.

Based on my past mains, many of us specially in 1st mains mismanage time and end up somehow completing 7 8 questions in hurry.Even if we write some good answers, number of average answers r high. Moreover, sometimes we miss demand. All these factors contribute to low scores.

2.4k views
@MarcusA May be that's the process. It seems logical .The bottom line is that quality is rewarded.

2.7k views
@Akkku 7-8 milte hi hain. Otherwise how can one get 131 121 110 115 types of scores

2.6k views
@Sahilkumar Haan post normalization/moderation ,effectively 3.5/4 for average answers 4/4.5 for good 5-6 for excellent answers.

3.4k views
@HankShrader I would love if they give more marks😅😅
May be in GS 2 GS 4 they gave more marks as few got 120-130 too.
However, in GS 1 highest was 115 and GS 3 it was around 110
More than 5-6 marks looks very liberal.

3.2k views
@Street_lamp If one completes each question with atleast average content and no missing of demand, one can get 95+

2.6k views
@Street_lamp Its possible because may be they saved time in the questions where they would have got marginal marks.
Rather,  that saved time can be used to write neatly, meeting demand ,diagrams etc.

2.5k views
@HankShrader It may seem that why not everyone is getting 95 but the challenge is
1 Some people spend too much time on 12- 13 Q and end up hurrying in 7-8.
2.Many claim they have so called completed all 20 Questions.
Doing justice with all questions is very different from somehow completing all Questions.
3.Some miss the demand/parts of Q.
4.Three four Questions are difficult and even average content is difficult to write.
5.Some write decent content but their presentation and structure is not appropriate.

@Dip Your performance will depend on other 13 Questions. Based on your inputs, your score may vary from 85-95.
Certainly not disastrous but not the best either.
Keep hope because these questions were difficult for everyone and moreover GS 3 is low scoring (based on 2020).

@TheFinalStand I don't know what works and what doesn't works in Ethics.
However,I have noticed  that some people give too much time on case studies. Part 1 is of 130 marks, more than case studies,i dont see how it can be less scoring than case studies.
In a survey on telegram of around 500 people, I saw that on an average people gave just 70-80 mins for 1st part.
Is giving less time on part 1 hurting overall scores?
It  may happen that a person who gives equal time to both case studies and part A may get more marks.Quality in any part wont be  poor and always average or above average .
I dont have data to answer this
Just a hypothesis

3.7k views
Very good score

How much time did u devote to Part A?Did u attempt part A 1st?

3.4k views
The questions of ethics are more demanding in terms of understanding the context. Unlike GS1 2 3 where there r many predetermined points to write, one has to generate arguments  in ethics based on demand of question.

Adding to that if one gives less than 6 mins, its very difficult  to  write good answers.

3.4k views
@GOT8 Presentation and Structure is nice.U have also used examples and language is simple.
These are the factors which make these answers better than the average answers.
Your marks has already justified these positive traits.
In my opinion, if the points can be  more precise (without compromising on understandibility) ,one can write more number of points.
Quality is of utmost importance but quantity and no of points also matter psychologically.
Other than that ,its good.

@Minato 130+ Essay
100+ in GS 1,2,4 and 95+ in GS 3
275+ Optional
These are good scores if one wants to get into IAS .Marks below that means rank will most probably be outside 100.
800-850 marks in mains is needed if one wants to have a good chance for IAS.
If one scores below these marks, she/he has to compensate by getting higher marks elsewhere.

2.5k views
@Minato Then u have to get 105+ in GS 2 or 4.
400+ in GS
130+ in essay
275+ in essay
It still sums up to 805 only.
Even after this,u have to score 186 in Interview to top 75 rank
Ideally, one should target atleast 820-830 marks .

Anyone with Maths or engineering optional?

How was the toughness of paper this year compared to 2020?

In Civil engineering, paper 1 was relatively easier while paper 2 was  tougher.

So in totality, the level is identical with last year.

Many humanities optional candidates are claiming that their paper was easier. Is the trend same for engineering and maths subjects??

2.9k views
@Duryodhan Last year case studies were tougher but with 3-3.5 pages only
This year, on average, there were 4-5 pages writing space which indicates its lengthy nature.
More or less same level as last year.

@masteroptimist Even if koi sirf 0.5 0.6 page extra likhe to total 3-4 pages extra to likhna hi padega case studies me.

People from technical optionals, what was your expected marks without scaling and actual marks awarded??

Divyanshu Chowdhary Rank 30 2020 from maths optional said that in paper 1 his expected marks without scaling was 200 and finally got 150.

In paper 2,his expected marks without scaling was 165 and he got 135.

Anyone having insights/previous experience with scaling?

@Bubba_gump Bhai humanities optionals me preparation me time lagta hoga revision me nahi.
In Maths and Engineering, even if u study optional for 12 hrs daily,it will still take atleast 30-35 days for one round revision.
So that means, it takes  400 hours of study just for one round of revision despite of the fact that u have studied it for years.
I have studied civil engineering for years but still  i had to give  6 7 hours daily to civil engineering just to revise it 1.5-2 times in this mains. That means i had to give 600 hours just to optional.
I m not aware of any humanities optional where you need that amount of hours.Kindly enlighten us if that's the case.

2.5k views
@RaGa In engineering/maths ,if u have worked very very hard for years and if u have a good day on exam, u may get 300+ or even 320s
If you have a very bad day still 250+.
However, most people grossly underestimate the effort required and get very poor marks.

The good thing about these optionals is that the rules of the game is very clear. If u have capacity to study madly and have concepts, the game is yours. The game is in your control not UPSC.More hard work often leads to more marks.

However, this is not the case with humanities optionals, hard work may not lead to marks and then one falls in a trap of marks around 240s and doesn't know how to increase it.
I will always choose an optional where hard work translates into marks.
The challenge in technical optionals is very clear-Jigre me dam to hai lo and reward leke jao.😅

2.3k views
@Shubz 500 hours lagte hain kya one round revision me ?😂

2.3k views
@zombieland Very true. One should avoid these subjects unless he she is extremely good as well as extremely hard working.

2.5k views
@Shubz Unfortunately, mains aur pre ke beech me hours hi rehte hain ages nahi😂😂
Anyways, history jaise optional me one doesnt know ki 300 kaise laayein.Clarity kam hai aise optonals me upar se UPSC kuch bhi absurd pooch leti hai jo Upinder Singh me bhi naa ho.
That is another type of toughness which is not even in your hands.
Isiliye the good thing about tech optional is that its extremely demanding but game aapke hath me hai not UPSC.Questions ki absurdity relatively kam hai humanities se.

2.5k views

Every subject is tough in a different way.

In humanities subjects one doesn't know what  is the sure shot way to get 280s 300.

.Imagine in GS one can score 380-400 with hard work but how to get 430 440 450,one doesn't know with surity

Its so tough when you don't know what will work and what will not.Every now and then ,their will be breaks on your hard work because may be that effort is going into waste. One has to always self introspect in these subjects.

On the other hand,in technical subjects, there is clarity of demand.

But that demand is too much hard work and concepts. Its easy to say I will work very hard but not everyone has tenacity to actually work hard.It needs tonnes of perseverance.

So type of toughness is different but every subject has its own puzzle.

2.4k views
@Capedcrusader1 Bhai top scores to similar hain but 260 280 aa jaate hain achhi preparation ke sath in tech optonals.

@Konohamaru What's your optional?
4.1k views
@Konohamaru No one knows for sure. Everything is a hypothesis.I have one hypothesis similar to equi percentile method which fits in some cases. However it can be entirely wrong.

Let us assume the average score of top 10 or top 5 percent students in a subject.

Let's assume that in paper 1 the  average score of  toppers is 125(raw marks) in humanities subjects(varies depending on toughness of subject),180 in engineering subjects,190 in Maths etc.
Since 70 pc of students take humanities optional, the average marks of top 5 pc or 10 pc students of all subjects combined may be around 135.

So the base for paper 1 is set at 135.

Now assume if someone in Maths scores 205 as actual score, that means he has scored 15 marks more than 190(average marks of Maths toppers)
That means add 15 marks to base 135 equals 150.
Now he will also get 3 4 marks extra benefits in scaling(depending on standard deviation)as he performed better than average of toppers.
So his actual marks may be 153.

Lets take the case of anthro.
Lets say if someone scored 140 as raw marks and average marks of Anthro toppers is 125.
That means he she is 15 marks above 125.
Therefore 15 marks will be added to the base of 135.
It becomes 150
Again 3 4  marks scaling benefits may occur.
So actual marks may be 153

So both the anthro guy and Maths guy may end up getting same actual scores despite of the fact that one scored 205 and other scored 140.
It depends on how better one performs relative to others in that subject.
Once again just a hypothesis 😂

@CluelessForNow Please don't make career decisions today. Think anything regarding  career after a week's time.

This exam isn't as subjective as people claim.
Whether in pre or mains, when i  worked hard with good answer writing and paper management, I cleared them.
When I didn't do these things,I didn't clear.

Most of my friends who cleared it before have again cleared it.
Those of my friends who didn't clear previously, unfortunately they didn't clear yet again.

Its not that subjective as we so often portray.

I will talk very straight and im sorry if it feels blunt

That feeling of giving best and things going well is common.
The reason for that is -
We judge our performance on an absolute scale instead of relative scale.
In my opinion, the day u start thinking that how u have to make ur answers best not just correct, it will do wonders.
U dont just have to beat the question but also ur competitors.
When u r able to scale up ur preparation to that level, try giving exam then and see its objectivity.

If ur love for academics is greater than civil services then kindly go for NET
If u think u can't scale up ur mains prep in a short time then go for NET
But if u r serious about civil services, then u have to prepare mains as if u r aiming for top rank not just IAS.

Again its not that subjective

Everyone likes good presentation

Everyone likes easy to check answers (Structuring )

Everyone likes relevant ,if not best, content.

Everyone likes unique answers.

The thing is relevance+uniqueness+presentation+structure

If u can work on them its a symphony not randomness or Brownian motion.

@CluelessForNow Marksheet will provide better clarity. May be u did good in some parts while scored below par in others. All permutations are open.

@Capedcrusader1 I'm confident you will work upon all these things.

I too used to think that these extra things, uniqueness, presentation etc are not mandatory and meeting demand is sufficient.
I was proved wrong when I failed in my previous mains.

Another equally important thing is paper management.
Giving equal time to most of the questions is very important.
A decent quality answer × 20 is better than 12 best answers and 8 bad answers .

The three key steps are
1.Knowing nitty gritty of presentation, structure, uniqueness and relevance
2.Practicing a lot so that these things r ingrained in our answers.
3.Good paper management in exam.

@sympa I wished I could incorporate uniqueness in every 20 answers but I could implement it in hardly 10-12 answers.
However, presentation relevance and structure was present in almost all answers.

Uniqueness can be in three areas
1.CONTENT-examples,facts,simple arguments
Eg in Tribal Q GS 1 Q 9
Gond tribals use Tendu leaves instead of plastics for packaging.

2 PRESENTATION-Unique diagrams, neatness, spacing between words and lines etc.
Eg in GS 2 Parliamentary accountability Q.
Increasing use of ordinance reduces Parliamentary accountability.
I used a step graph that during 1950 to 1980 there was 1 ordinance passed for every 10 bill.
It was 2/10 for 1980-2010
3.3/10 for 2010 onwards.

3.Structure
Breaking into subpart
Eg Q 1b GS 4 ways to prevent non ethical means in a CS
One can write
A)External Checks
CAG CVC CBI Courts
B)Internal Guides
Integrity Compassion

Adding New dimensions to the answer.

Eg in question of constructive programme by Gandhiji, after writing 2 pages of specific programs one can write
Why Gandhiji launched these programs.
Impact of these programs.

In Africa India partnership Question

One can give new dimension in last

How India's partnership is different from China

Hand in hand vs debt trap diplomacy.

Can one maintain all these 3 aspects of uniqueness in every answers?

A big NO

However, somewhere one can write unique content, somewhere unique presentation other times unique structure.

Choices are Two

1.Chase this madness, fail in achieving ideal results but end up performing better

2.Blame subjectivity, randomness, luck,UPSC etc.

@Capedcrusader1 Next cycle is gold.
100+ days between pre and mains.
That would be sufficient for you.
