when can a person expect interview call?
if across 4 gs papers marks are average and no question left. and essay is above average and 1 optional paper has become an issue due to time shortage. is there anyone who could get interview call when they least expected them to. what are the parameters to judge oneself regarding interview call.
IN the GS 2 and GS 3papers, there are questions which have gone back to 5-6 years. now these questions are either conceptual or simply current affairs. My doubt is how do i go about changing studies and be able to handle these questions should a situation like this arise again. These were the questions that im talking about and they have a reasonable share of marks (if someone aims to do all 20 questions):
- GS3: GDP series , S400 , blue LED, Global AQGs
-GS2: 14th FC
now though i had fair knowledge of GDP series, i could not attempt it as well as i had expected for a simple reason, im aligned with magazines of past year only. same for s 400, i dont know why s400 suddenly became important. likewise for 14FC too.
is there any way to have a battery of diagrams and flowcharts ready for GS papers. i have seen them and used them in mocks but none were made in final papers. but its probably needed to give a good feeling to examiner. Ex: in infra questions of GS3, was there a possibility to incorporate this?
how to collect them beforehand

can anyone help me with choosing one of these to kickstart pre prep:
- starting with core books (4 in number) ->efficiency will reduce but satisfaction will be high. experience tells me that revising without practising is time wasted more or less.
-doing previous year mocks (sectional)->i have not yet bought this year mocks. sectionals hardly make any difference
-revising ncerts ->i dont underestimate them. so revising is important for me. especially for geo and economy.
-clearing my current affair backlogs (quiz + monthly) and ES/ISFR
another related doubt:
is it wise to devote full time/day to prelim prep now. I am not someone who is particularly confident of prelims. dont think anyone is but will speak for myself.
in that scenario is it wise to add value for mains (i have no formal notes for mains but faced no particular issue in that area as far as writing mains was concerned).
am i dangerously missing out on something here? (mains notes)

few things i want to ask those who wrote mains:
-the mais 365 document which you ppl read (i read too), could you use the information as such in answers? not the facts as such, but the analysis part which has way forward etc.
-those who wrote mains previously too, how close were their final marks to the mock score. this q is based on the assumption that the performace of mocks would more or less be replicated in final exams.on certainly improvises in between mocks and between mocks and final exams.
so was there any huge shocking difference in the final marks? kindly give example also

anthro paper can be called tougher than last year for following reasons, and this is solely my analysis:
- after seeing natufian culture, jane goodall, ks singh, vn misra. now these questions, if one doesnt know which would be the case in atleast half of them, a person would most likely leave them. he would thus save 20 mins of time. 20mins of time is no joke if other answers are to reach a stage of perfection.
- for 2021 paper, this situation i.e shock value was less. but here is the deal, neither would you leave them nor would you write them. so you basically average out in the whole paper.
- another thing to notice is: paper 2 2020 has following 10 markers: rb foote, aryan invasion,ks singh,dravidian lang, khap,ssanskitisation, narmada man,linguistic minorites in india,concept of ethnicity.
now compare these 10 questions to2021 paper 2 10 questions. purushartha and living,tc relevance,harappan seals, caste and social capital, factionalism and politics,urbanisn and tribal insttns, concept of tribe and census, politics of recognition and deprovation

5 min of brainstorming in both essay combined is not something to be proud of. for all i can do in 5 mins is take deep breaths to control the situation of seeing all philosophical essays followed by choosing the right topic (safest + demand is clear + i can explore maximum dimensions). actually this takes more time. the follow up is actually easy as i let brain go haywire and finally arrange thoughts. start writing and more thoughts follow which are subsequently included.
rest completing all papers before 10 mins in my view probably means that content was not just average but like really average. "infrastructure is good for india " type average. it can also mean that mind was working seamlessly and all questions were well attempted as thoughts(relevant) kept pouring in. i have to think even in 10 marker for 6-7 seconds before starting to write.while writing, thoughts keep pouring intermittently which decides average or above average answer for me. and that breaks flow and time needed increases (for me)
sujective toh the hi nai gs 2 and 3 ke paper.
if you include 4/5 factual questions, you have again made it a game of luck. because people who know these clearly have an edge.
one doubt wrt ethics case studies:
i have not used the concepts of part A in case studies by specifically mentioning (ex: i have not written "as per utilitarian perpective iwill do this... or , by going for rights apporach to solve ethical dilemma)
reason for not doing so is that i feel that theory is tested i part A. they need solutions now and analysis.
also, i have scored fine (as per me) in case studies of mocks without writing the abovementioned

by misdirection i simple mean that the second part means nothing. what i wrote in first q was a breakdown of values of neutrality. there ae 4 of those. i explained them a bit as one wouldnt know they are different unless i explicitly tell them. this helped me write 10 different values in question 2.

They'll be learning the job from you and other underlings not just during training but their entire careers and still won't learn the job. They'll trash your work for not using Bureaucratic English. They'll be sort of managing your day to day work.
Every year you'll have to do Gandhigiri to not get transferred to far flung areas. You'll be forced to do dubious things on command of higher ups. But if you're bent and have no morals this is just a great job and will make you rich.
No such thing in Assistant professor jobs. You may even get the top post one day. People tend to look for jobs where they may reach the top.
Asst Professor means no transfers! Set for life. Lots of free time, and if you're really interested in your subject, many opportunities for research and travel, Plus automatic "Respect" in society. They usually (should) leave it only for IAS/IPS home cadre or IFS.
Are you seriously comparing the respect a Dy SP or SDM gets to whatever an Assistant Professor gets.
Even your father's cousin's friend's son will brag about his father's friend's cousin's son is Dy SP or SDM. These people can get things done. They also lend people money because they generally have surplus cash. Assistant professors are always asking to borrow money. Even their children don't think much of them. That's the ugly truth.
But quality of life and work environment is still a lot better in assistant professor
Haha bro... reality is very different. Dy Collector in Bihar seems like a very prestigious post, but when you get into the services, AIS officers will have superiority over you. I know a person who got into Ssc cgl, got one promotion, went to become Dc inBihar , came back to rejoin in centre
I know this all too well. One of my friends in group b service with loads of extra income got selected as assistant professor, he was thinking of declining it. A few bent people were also advising him to decline it. I persuaded him to take the job. I basically told him that If I was in his place I'd throw my resignation today.
He was getting 6000 grade pay I think above that any amount of extra income won't matter if you're not satisfied with your work environment and career progression.
But you do understand that Deputy collectors carry much more weight in society if not in their offices. One of my long distance cousins got SDM in UP PCS and his parents threw a grand party. The pride his parents show is just something else. He soon got an expensive car and lots of money. He got married too.

Of course I do. We as a society have reached a stage where we condemn corruption and dowry in public but still aspire for it in private. Most people around me would give up a kidney for good postings throughout their careers. That's why people treat seniors offices with more respect than temples. They don't just turn around and walk away. They take few steps backward till they reach the door, bow down then walk away.

In all my years in government, I haven't had a single lucrative posting nor have I ever asked for it, also I can't do the whole bootlicking thing. I don't know how you confused me stating facts with me celebrating corruption.
It's like if I say Northeast people are called c***** by everyone or the word bihari is treated as abusive word in Northwest or fair skin is worshipped, then all of a sudden you think I'm celebrating all these. It's just plain facts, look around you.

Essay ..my first attempt (2017), i expected 150 , as i believed i wrote really good essays on agriculture and women(good old days , where no mandatory philosophical topics are there). I got 110, while top score that year is 175. There after my essays got stagnant in range of 125-130, which are more or less on expected lines.
With respect to improvement, my GS and essay scores are almost similar from my 2nd attempt, irrespective of all the value additions, answer writing practice etc etc. Average marks in GS2 and GS3, below average in GS1 and GS4 .
If my optional clicks..i used to get interview call or if it tanks i couldn't clear mains. And i could never predict my optional score since it's humanities. It fell down from 280(2018) to 210 (2019) to 250(2020)
With increasing attempts the variation between your expectations and actual scores reduce, atleast for GS. Optional tho.. Only God knows .😂

Scores usually varies depend on scaling in that year..hence i can't put a number as it's going to be misleading.For me.Average =( general trends of scores in top 200 people )- 10 marks.. For example...in 2020.Eg: gs2 last year, many selected people got in range of 105-120, i got 98 or 99, then it's average.Below average = ( general trends of scores in top 200 people )- 20 marks.Eg: My ethics in 2019 is 118, where as most of selected folks got in 140s.its below average.It's purely subjective. Others may have different opinions.I just pitched in this Gyan..as I'm also bored waiting for results 😀 so take it lite.Regarding optional, it depends on how one manages time, his mental health between pre and mains , how much value he wants to add etc etc. I mean if one is preparing full-time, 3-4 months are decent enough to add value for optional notes.

if a person of any category clears the cutoff of UR , the that person (category person) takes away UR seat.
however if a person is unable to clear ur cutoff, they will get the same post in their category (if they clear the category cutoff)
if rank 15 has 1021 marks and cleared ur IAS cutoff, then they take ur seat. however the category mentioned is still their own in service allocation
this has not happened in 78th rank. why? why has category itself changed? is this a minor typo error?

Better think in terms of marks. If one got 790 last year. Think wat needs to b done to get 836. Then competition will become bit doable

And for some reason they love it when the innovation is shown in the way of writing (flow charts etc) giving content a backseat. So many times when I’ve scored less in test series and went on to compare with best copies, I felt like the evaluation has been really average & borderline unfair.

@RaGa In engineering/maths ,if u have worked very very hard for years and if u have a good day on exam, u may get 300+ or even 320sIf you have a very bad day still 250+.However, most people grossly underestimate the effort required and get very poor marks.The good thing about these optionals is that the rules of the game is very clear.If u have capacity to study madly and have concepts,the game is yours.The game is in your control not UPSC.More hard work often leads to more marks.However,this is not the case with humanities optionals, hard work may not lead to marks and then one falls in a trap of marks around 240s and doesn't know how to increase it.I will always choose an optional where hard work translates into marks.The challenge in technical optionals is very clear-Jigre me dam to hai lo and reward leke jao.😅

I have interacted with around 20 mains candidates.. including few on this forum through chat..
Around 80% of them said that they have performed well and are expecting around 270+ in optional and 130+ in essay..
In GS .. Expectation of around 400 is common among candidates this year..
So point I m making is..
Many are expecting 800+ this year.. whether they get or not is altogether a different story..
Expectations are higher this year than previous.. this shows paper was easier this year atleast as per the perception of the candidates..
PS.. I m not exaggerating.. stated what I have observed..

Wat is the worst situation in preparation of civil services?
For me it was when I thought that i hv given my best and still fail to qualify mains. It is the worst situation as it becomes difficult to even find where I was lacking.

Not proud bhai. It was a very difficult time. People eulogize the exam too much. Sadly, everyone thought I cleared "IAS exam" but then I'm still here. So answering so many questions now. Infact, had stopped socializing for a while.

I can only tell my experience (and no "sir" please). I didn't attend mocks during the initial period, thought I'll prepare first and then attend. But that's a mistake. It doesn't matter if we get destroyed in a mock (unless they capture the video and upload it without permission). So, I'd say, if some good institute is conducting a mock now, with a good panel, and provided you don't have to travel long distance to attend it, it's good to attend.
To me, questions from both history (optional) and degree subject were asked. But no questions about hone state. Home state, degree subject, optional, hobbies are all equally important. To me, history optional question was asked connected to another fact provided in my DAF (wrt Sanskrit), and from there they asked 3-4 questions, mostly simple and direct.
From degree subject, few practical questions were asked, again pretty basic stuff.

Without prelims mains likhne ka request is completely unfair as per me and UPSC will not allow it in any case, may be they may just increase one attempt till a particular year like 2025 etc
i checked out of curiosity long back. it was about last attempt. i dont know what form it has taken now. i dont think hunger strike is related to the latest mains issue due to covid.
that one attempt thing is about prelims only. but they should give 1 extra attempt. what have they got to lose

It's rumored that Putin has a golden shower video of Trump. Trump only won because Hillary said she'd tax the rich and the rich cannot let politicians or public believe that you can commit blasphemy and still win an election.
I was watching the Trump-Hillary debate on YouTube back in 2016 and all the comments were on 5 basic themes and all in favor of Trump. The channel was cnn so at least 70% of them should have favored Hillary. Explaning all this will take a long time. Basically it's called astroturfing or fake grassroot the current strategy of prashant kishore. It involves a lot of fake news, rigged election claims, social media comments and posts creating a perception of mass support, creating groups on Facebook or quora buying likes and comments.
Putin probably wasn't responsible for Trump's election but Ukraine wouldn't have happened if Trump was in power, mainly because of the golden shower video and his wife is probably kgb.
Putin certainly did interfere in presidential elections. it was a part of his expansion policy under which among other things like countering color revolutions being supported by US elsewhere, he had to attack US directly. which he did. there are a lot of evidences for this interefence. the reports in US are proof.
after this, he got even more emboldened when trump came into power in 2016 because there was an opinion that trump is lot similar to putin on many grounds. democracy was threatened in US and people were divided in US which was what putin achieved.
Trump clearly accepted no role of russia in this in a press conference with putin right next to him smiling, on being asked a striaghtforward question to trump (whom do you believe, russia or proofs in US). but all that aside, my sole question still remains. we have enough to bash biden's leadership in all this. but what exactly would have trump done. would appreciate being enlightened on trump's actual actions taken in such situations apart from his rhetorics. one thing which he failed at was strenghtening US democracy (attack on capitol hill). anything which weakens democracies is good for putin.

OUT- 5th attempt and 1st mains.
I am utterly confused on what to do next so hoping somebody could guide me. I had been working in a government organisation and resigned in January 2021. The decision for resigning was based on
1. Obviously wanted to give a whole hearted attempt at UPSC before moving on
2. I didn't want to continue working in the same organisation due to not so great promotion opportunities and work profile
I couldn't clear prelims in the first 3 attempts because I jumped into the sea of appearing for the examination without any preparations. By my fourth attempt I realised that I should have planned on appearing only after preparing well. So, I wasted my first 3 attempts because I wasn't prepared well. I started preparing only after getting into the job so I should have planned by attempts maybe 2 years after because what normally people could cover in 1 year, I was able to cover in 2.
Failing to clear in the 4th attempt was heartbreaking but then I knew what shortcomings I had and worked on them. In my 5th attempt, clearing prelims was a great motivator also because I had quit my job and was 2 steps closer to my goal. But I have failed to clear mains and obviously I do realise that there are loopholes in my mains preparation.
Long story short, when I quit my job I planned on giving one fully dedicated attempt and then moving on if I wasn't able to clear. Now, I am at that stage where I should be moving on. But I feel so confused if I should appear once again for my last attempt or go on preparing for CAT.
If all goes rosy, I will only need 1 year to settle. However, if it doesn't I will need 4 year because 2022 goes to waste and I will appear for CAT in 2023 and start college from 2024.
Can anybody guide me rationally. I know the decision is mine to make but all I am looking for is some fresh perspective.

@Capedcrusader1 Dont know about job assurity but it does open gates to corporate sector if you have had long break or in my case my job experience is not of much value in corporate and I want to swtich from a technical to non- technical job

btw there are exams which are similar to cat, infact easier, of govt.you probably know all those
i have my personal question to ask. If i get a govt job which is lower to cse posts , followed by cse prep, is it a wise idea. im asking this because i do give other exams and reach till the end but deep down i know that i can improve on cse

Think anything regarding career after a week's time.This exam isn't as subjective as people claim.Whether in pre or mains,when i worked hard with good answer writing and paper management, I cleared them.When I didn't do these things,I didn't clear.Most of my friends who cleared it before have again cleared it.Those of my friends who didn't clear previously,unfortunately they didn't clear yet again.Its not that subjective as we so often portray.I will talk very straight and im sorry if it feels bluntThat feeling of giving best and things going well is common.The reason for that is -We judge our performance on an absolute scale instead of relative scale.In my opinion,the day u start thinking that how u have to make ur answers best not just correct, it will do wonders.U dont just have to beat the question but also ur competitors.When u r able to scale up ur preparation to that level, try giving exam then and see its objectivity.If ur love for academics is greater than civil services then kindly go for NETIf u think u can't scale up ur mains prep in a short time then go for NETBut if u r serious about civil services,then u have to prepare mains as if u r aiming for top rank not just IAS.Again its not that subjective

the reasons apart from the time given in this exam which is not letting me leave it outright is that i have seen improvement along the way, have seen my mock scores and worked upon them, pretty much know now what went wrong and that i know myself. i am very stubborn and i think many oeople are like me.

@Capedcrusader1 Definately you can take up a job since you have been preparing for quite sometime so you can manage job and preparation. And at the end of the day it is about if you find meaning in the work you are doing. However, sometimes circumstances are such that you have to prioritise a job that pays over a job that you dont want to do. So, choose accordingly

@Capedcrusader1 I'm confident you will work upon all these things.I too used to think that these extra things,uniqueness,presentation etc are not mandatory and meeting demand is sufficient.I was proved wrong when I failed in my previous mains.Another equally important thing is paper management.Giving equal time to most of the questions is very important.A decent quality answer × 20 is better than 12 best answers and 8 bad answers .
paper time management is largely not an issue i remember in all gs papers
and i had included data etc too in answers
thats why as of now, i wont say that a huge change is needed. the reason for my failure is for optional
my copy would have looked really disgusting with so many skull diagram being practised and no sense of seriousnsess. if such a copy would reach my hands, i too would not be very liberal with marks to myself.
time crunch is also the issue in optional and less value addition and current relevance is not there.
gs cant be wronged until marks are out. in my case.
how do you plan on improvising gs writing now? one cant do it now
@Forumite you are suggesting that there's a method to this madness. Were you able to pull off the 4-spice mantra for all your answers in exam conditions... And could you highlight the uniqueness aspect of it?

topper copy dekhein, ya value addition search karein jisme diagram ho, ya beforehand tayar rakhe ye sab, ya koi utube channel pe search karein. isme madness hai. kyunki muje lagta h sab 20 questions likh sakte hain meri tarah aur fir bahar payenge khud ko. i think s400, who, aqg wagera dhang se aata rha hoga logo ko, maine isme bhi jabaran number de dia khud ko

ill give 1 mock, give it time irrespective of marks scored (which i didnt do), write down the improvisations, give the mock again (no improvisations this time), not worry about marks
6th Attempt, 4th mains and finally civils journey comes to an end.
Started my journey 5 years ago with enthusiasm at its peak.Gave a half baked attempt along with job. Thought I will give it my all and went for full fledged prep. Now the cycle has finally ended.
My learnings from the journey.. And if people can relate to it..
1.doing a solid homework before jumping in
I messed up with my optional initially and wasted two mains.
2.Not seeking help when required.
3.Loosing momentum after prelims.
4.Failing to realise each stage has its specific demands.
5.Overconfident initially as I was a bright student throughout.
6.Even though my tipping point was reached within first two years of prep, still continued to hang on.
7.Finally luck is an essential element which we don't realise.
However this exam has taught me a lot of life lessons which will always stay.More than knowing about things happening around me, it has made me a more self aware individual.

@Capedcrusader1 for doing well in mains, u need to be good to very good in ur optional..the last 30 days time before mains should be most efficiently used.
i worked really hard this time. its very tough to accept failure. optional needs to be strenghtened and how exactly is my fear

Something fishy suspicious surely happens behind the closed doors of upsc. How come it happens that there are 30% girls in final list very year when only 7 % girls clears prelims. Upsc is breeding secrecy and dishonesty in the name of confidentiality.

i really wouldnt like to comment on GS as of now until marks are out.
i can speculate N number of things that might have gone wrong. but the thing is i cant do drastic changes too.
and i know what went wrong in optional which i know has led to my failure.
