@Capedcrusader1 i may be 100% wrong about this but this mad craze about finishing the paper costed me my two previous mains...this time i decided i am gonna do 18 questions per gs paper but i will write quality stuff..make structure..draw diagrams etc...i left 6-8 questions in all papers combined but i wrote very nicely (or so do i think).. let's see if this costs me again or works in my favour.

i only know (from my mocks analysis that), filling pages is not necessary but writing IBC format and finishing paper is to be strived for. i agree with you completely here. lets say in a paper i know 18 answers nicely, i can afford to even leave 2 questions. provided thats the situation. possibly you were in that situation.

@Capedcrusader1How were your other papers ?

i feel i did better than last year for two reasons : improved writing and better presentation . like many others gs3 is the one im most hopeful about, 1 and 2 in both: some questions were unknown and i had less content. 4 i finished last year also but diff this time is improved presentation of CS. 10 markers i feel are subpar. essay i cant and wont evaluate. prepared a lot for essay and ethics this time

14-15 questions me bhi  bilkul cut and dried answer nai banenge. usme bhi log achhe answer likh lenge alag alag type ke unless its ourely static. also in easy questions, one finishes them in less than stipulated time (7/11mins)
4.5k views
@Capedcrusader1 that is correct...but if you are able to increase 1.5 marks per question in say 15-16 questions...that is an increase of 24 marks then that's good too...baki it is all speculation...let's see.

yes true. i had that aim in mind but wasnt very comfortable with question paper as im usually with mocks

People who've written mains earlier-

1. are optional papers evaluated on a different benchmark as compared to GS papers? To expect decent marks are we supposed to write A level answers throughout?

2. Again in optional, if it was a particularly difficult paper with certain vague questions, do the scores fall or is the marking done accordingly

they probably are bit flexible in optional. you can write side stuff but not in gs

i think each and every part needs to be seperately addressed. it showd clarity of thought and marks are given for parts only. 5 parts in each case study makes you wary of time otherwise what will one write if hasnt even answered the sub parts specifically. i think i dont understand the issue here
3.5k views
@Capedcrusader1 that is correct... but in the exam hall, i thought listing options before the person 1st, then writing merits and demerits would make checker look back and forth and turn pages... so i thought i should evaluate each option there only...your approach is better now i think.

i took tests in lukman. there he had changed my complete approach. he was of the opinion that first you list all options available because that way examiner knows ki we know the thing and he immediately sees the options. then draw a table and do merit demerit thing. good thing is upsc also asks that way. initially my approach was to list each option and do merit demerit there itself but thats not how upsc wants it. but the issue again is that i dont think all parts carry equal weightage. listing 4 options having 4 marks and evaluating all having 4 marks doesnt seem very judicious allocation of marks

3.4k views

I also took case study classes at Lukmaan. But i did not follow this approach due to time crunch. Repeating oltions two times or not writing options while evaluating:i found both problematic. So i went with traditional approach i.e

a+b: option nd evaluation together.

Atleast it helped in completing paper. God knows how much marks upsc will deduct

i found this new approach of mine more time saving.. lets see what upsc decides

@Aspirant123 options should be always be more than two.

where is it written? on what official basis do you assert that?

min 3 is must.two that you choose most probably be extremes

4.5k views
@Capedcrusader1 3 is required when you choose two extremes and u have to choose middle path
But if your options are not extreme then u can choose one of them n  there is no need of 3
Eg Environment notice question one can say option 1 withdraw notice option 2nd-  issue notice with time for complying with standards

Or one of the extremes is the answer
Eg Prabhat question either u select or reject candidature

pata nai bhai. usually i find 2 extremeties very easily. the other 2 require some thinking

4.3k views
i dont think there is a single solution to case study. if that were the case, they wouldnt put us in that situation. i mean one cant say that such and such will be the solution alone
4.3k views

ap more than two options toh select karoge hi. kyunki next me apko middle path lena h. aur agar sirf 2 loge toh merit demerit zaada likhne padenge. muje yaad nai last time kya aya tha. but course of action nai pucha islie aur bhi zaada important h more options explore karna. agar course of action rehta toh alag se likh lete 1 page. but yahan toh justification dena h kisi ek option ka jo ki course of action rahega. obviously wo option detailed rahega.

last year se koi lena dena nai

I want to ask something to those who clear mains or miss mains by a whisker:

for gs 1,2,3, how many questions do you actually know the answer to.

do you also know the answer to static questions which are asked out of the blue?

how many questions are well answered?

only if you’ve done self analysis. Thank you

3.2k views

Hello everyone! How was mains this time? I remember having discussions on Quest portal after 2019 Mains. Activity here this year is pretty low, have people moved to other platforms?

Anyways, I found GS 1 toughest out of all papers. GS 2 was good though I think my Law Optional background helped me in several questions (the same would be the case for Geo Optional students in GS-1, so i guess such advantages get evened out). GS-3 was more straightforward than previous years and I hope checking is in consonance with the level of questions.

For GS 4, I wonder if commission considers students as stakeholders while setting such a paper. While giving lengthy case studies may be justified, if you give five subparts (no creativity whatsoever from Commission in the way they set the paper) to each case study, all the gyaan about creativity/innovation/making answer distinct goes out of the window and one is just concerned about completing the paper.

My personal opinion. What do you guys think?

I won’t comment on gs4 but agree with you on 123

1 was toughest

and across the papers some of the questions had little to write- a trend seen last year too

4.8k views

I recall my feeling during gs 4

the way cs is made and looking at the length of 10 markers, one thing is for sure, I can’t sit around and figure out the so called demand of every question.

I do have a certain format which needs to be followed but if I start out solving this paper like one of those mocks, I’m done. Better to apply whatever logistics there is to it.

Aisa kuch nhi hota..last time ethics ka 1st question chod diya tha matrix wala..still got 109..

But yes if first 4-5 questions are sub standard it does make an impression and psychologically impacts the examiner's attitude..you are penalised more for mistakes and granted less additional marks for good things compared to someone who has created a better impression..but this will happen only if one examiner checks the entire paper, if subject matter experts are checking respective portions then this shouldn't hold true..but its always advisable to write a few good answers at start if you know those answers..

i hope ye information "common sense" wala logic se nai aya h.

Quite impressive. You seems to be experienced candidate. What did you attempt in part A. I attempted  topic 3 history scientific and romanticism.

My score in essay has been consistent on 109 marks (2020, 2021). Hope it improves this year.

same, rationality and romanticism was full of content with no ambiguity in core demand. i defined the 2 terms before itself

4.1k views

wrote in headings (dimensions) and thesis (3/4 dimensions) and anti thesis (1 or 2). everything from rrmr, einstein(quote in starting, no anecdote in any essay), buddha, mahabharata (romanticism consequence, losing what remains hatinapur) etc is covered.

why romanticism is needed is written

pre conclusion: panchpran in this essay somewhere was inserted

apada me avasar in next essay was included.

i have to look up what exactly i wrote.

Some toppers (Example: Ira Singhal Ma'am) also in the past highlighted this issue where the examiner may give you less marks for showing off your optional knowledge in the essay.

yes but having said that nothing is black and white. writing it appropriately may help. last year ppl said that philosophy optional had an advantage

2.8k views

Why do people say writing is not important

and that only content matters. If I get a copy with poor handwriting, why will I give it marks

2.8k views

Some years back I saw a video on yt

The topper said that in essay he wrote in a format of conversation between people and got really less marks

2.5k views
@Capedcrusader1 Yes i also came across that. Might be said by Ira singhal.

One reason may be, he joined test series and written all prepared data and ideas to fit passage demand without coherence and continuity.

On twitter, one ex- examiner said, people are so obsess with quotes and Gandhi examples, historical examples and schemes. They unnecessarily try to fit them in essay and make no sense..

But still 58.. bahut kam diya

Ira singhal nai

he’s sir. 58 is way too less. Ek essay likhna bhul gaye honge

2.5k views
one topper was saying in an interview that in gs1 he wrote 3 answers wrongly under 3 different questions so he had to strike it off..he felt like crying and all ... then in marksheet he got actually one of the highest in gs 1...so expect the unexpected...neither 58 can be explained nor sometimes marks shooting up beyond expectations...very unpredictable

Exceptions are not the rule

Neither 58guy nor crying guy must be analyzed

and always never expect anything in this exam or expect the expected because there is a set of standard of preparation atleast. Jo utna kar rha h uska ho ja rha h

Instagram generation does not means only Instagram and as I said skilled and experienced one.

Btw agnipath is not about specialist. That is lateral entry thing. Looks like you have half baked knowledge. :)

You were calling IAS as overhyped clerk (generalist) and then suggested that they ought to be specialized. That’s a generalist specialist debate. Neither agnipath nor instagram has anything to do with it.

2.3k views
@Capedcrusader1 btw  IAS is not generalist, he is specialist in management. Govt is now focusing on domains specialisation. Kitabi Gyan se and mere chote se 6 sal k managerial  exp se...generally,  Specialists are not good managers. They can be good supervisor.. isi liye corporate me bhi IIMs or mgmt grads prefer karte rather than promoting an engineer to management position. Max he can be product head rather than Gm or country head or CEO. 85 percent CEOs in corporate belongs to marketing and general management. Marketing is also similar to general management.

Cook can be chief chef, but most of the hotels are run by entrepreneurs..
IRMS debate bahut interesting hai .. esp by technical side hasi ati hai.. unke tark sun k

I never talked about nature of ias

gentleman’s comment can be referred.

he clearly said agnipath is specialist.

shayad sarkar se pehle inse scheme pass hoti hogi

2.2k views
@Capedcrusader1 i am supporting u bro. Kon specialist 4 5 sal k liye ayegaa... Or kon 4 6 sal me specialist ban jayega..

Specialist are career specialist.. jinhone apni jindagi usme sopi hai..

Apni path sirf  brute force k liye hai...Agni path implement ho hi na sakta... Buddhe tik tok pe hag nahi sakte, to newspaper me hagte hai... This is called intellectual chutiyapa. Jo buddhe ias kar rahe.. Agnipath ka idea copy kar k recommend Karo.. inko bas itna hi ata hai.. copy paste..

Bro my simple point is that the idea of agnipath is not poorly envisaged. It’s the need of the hour.

I agree with its basic tenet. How it will unfold in CS no one knows. So clearly everyone has half baked knowledge about its nature in CS.

And as far as glorifying of Cs is concerned, is topic ko toh rehne hi do bhai

Those who have interpreted "you cannot step into the same river twice" as you cannot do the same mistakes again,

Shall we drop emails to upsc to consider our interpretation?

What is it’s actual interpretation

2.7k views
as per Heraclitus-

It means that everything is in a state of flux, I.e. continuously changing.

hm demand is different

2.6k views

i have a question. if someone had known about this quote beforehand and wrote a good essay, wont this is be unfair to him when n number of other interpretations are also being considered.

well there arent n , there is just one more way to look at this quote. so probably they will consider.

2.6k views
well this is an essay paper. And an independent statement was provided to us to write an essay of 1000 words.
The context of the statement was not set, thus it may have multiple interpretations.

But who am I to say anything lol. Everything depends upon UPSC now!

agreed. ye kabhi bola keraclitus ka quote, toh wahi likho jo usne bola h. so it should be considered

waise jo video, photo, ya any media item public me hai. isko use karne ke lie owner ki permission kyun lagegi? if we are not using their credit or content inappropriately then why is consent needed?

consent toh alag baato ke lie lagegi na. personal info sharing etc me. nai?

is hisab se meme community ka toh dandha band ho jayegi. kitni consent lenge akshay kumar se

@masteroptimist And please define what is "sensibly picking the topic"
Many essays have multiple interpretations

interpretation toh khair 1 hi hoti h but upsc ne kabhi nai bola ek hi tareeke se likho. this is valid

2.1k views
@Capedcrusader1 In this case there is a clear division of interpretation
Jisne quote padha wo alag tarike se interpret karega
Otherwise jisne nahi padha wo alag tarah se interpretat karega

On this essay coaching community me bhi divide ho gaya interpretation me

BHAI 2 cheez hai: upsc kya interpretation leta hai, aur community kya interpretation leti hai. aap kuch bhi interpret karte rahiye but demand 1 hi hogi. usko leke upsc kitna flexible h wo matter karta hai.

2.3k views

upsc decide karegi. rather than running after one essay, if curious, one can see how copies are checked.

what if a person found a 3rd interpretation which the youtube video has not covered. what about that case?

2.3k views
@Capedcrusader1 Yahan pe split vote ho gaya hai because of community
What u r saying is right if maine kuch atrangi satrangi sa interpretation le liya ho essay ka which is unique to me But
Out of 9 people i have talked to jisne ye essay likha ,5 ne repeat the mistakes waala interpret kiya The others knew the quote.
The sample is very small but what i want to say is that if majority ne wahi interpret kiya to it may set a different agenda

agenda kaun set kar rha h. aur wo atrangi satrangi wala bhi toh sahi ho sakta h na. majority rule thode h ye

@Capedcrusader1 15  videos already dekh chuka and there is a split on interpretation
Secondly, this guy has checked the upsc essays which makes him more reliable
You or I may have a subjective opinion but this guy has checked them
To uski baat has more weight than our mann ki baat

bhai aise bhot "guy" hain market me theek h.

but anyway, maine toh ye essay likha h nai. reason i am arguing is, maine ye seekha h ki essay ki demand rehti h fix. ab ho sakta h philosophical essay me upsc 4/6 ko sahi maan le. in that case, philosophical essays wont be tough to write.

meri man ki baat nai h. just saying.

kisiki baat ka weight nai h. sirf upsc me jo check kar rha hu uska weight h thats it.

meri samajh nai aa rhi. agar 1 essay ki 75 demand hai toh bhai 8 kyun de rahe ho. 2 do na!

kya matlab h iska : they will be expected to keep closely to the subject of essay....?

bro. you are creating difference when there is none. obviously whoever knew it is about motherhood would have also written on women.aur wahi usme ayega. you cant write 1000 words on motherhood. and you dont even recall what you wrote but its clearly very close to demand.

2.3k views
@Capedcrusader1 The problem with this type of thought is
You r not arguing my argument.
You r arguing my Right to argument
If u had a different interpretation, it would have been perfectly fine but what u r saying is that
There is only one FIXED interpretation for all topics and you cannot think anything else

Secondly
KEEPING CLOSELY TO SUBJECT OF MATTER MEANS
whatever you have interpretated be Close to that
Not to deviate much from your interpretation.

ill respond on 2nd part of your argument:

"..keeping close to subject of essay.." . at a very basic level it means that there is a certain expectation from the essay you chose. just keep close to it. write a good essay and be creative but dont deviate too much.

so as you said "whatever I interpret" has to be either "close to the demand " or "be the demand".

i dont know how i am hindering your right to argument.

2.3k views
@Capedcrusader1 He didnt even mention motherhood and got 120
Maine to.mother and women dono.pe max 0.5 page bhi nahi likha hoga I.got 119

Agar ek fixed interpretation hota to bahut difference hota between his and my marks

he said "nahin hoga.." padh toh lo pura yar.

toh aapne kya women pe focus nai kia hai?

main baar baar keh raha hu demand ke aspas likho koi dikkat nai. but kuch aur hi likh aao toh upsc jaane bhai

2.2k views
@Capedcrusader1 You r saying there is only One FIXED demand
You only said -only One interpretation is there which is FIXED
Thats how you r hindering the right to argument.

Close.to demand YeS but there is no one fixed DEMAND

Otherwise its not possible that
Those who wrote nothing on motherhood
Those who wrote everything on motherhood
Those who wrote everything on women empowerment
Are getting similar marks
If there is only ONE DEMAND that means the other demand is completely wrong
Tab to 20 30 marks de dene chahiye baaki 2 ko

im still saying the demand is fixed. jab tak wo fix nahi karoge tabtak samaj kaise ayega ki kya "close to demand" hai lallu?

anuradha bhasin case allowed right to internet as a FR under art19.

2.4k views

Hi all,

This is my first post. Since the mains exam, one thing has been going in my head regarding the essay paper.

In section B, I attempted the 8th question - "Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right".

Contrary to the Hindi translation of 'right' i.e. 'sahi' , I interpreted 'right' in the fundamental rights, etc. context. I defined choices and rights.Rights - as claims of individuals against state. Choices - as decision making, speech, practicing religion, etc.

I just want to know if anyone else has done the same. I began the essay with the Anuraddha Bhasin case, where the Supreme Court has allowed the 'choice' of using internet as a right for freedom of expression & profession, but fell short of recognising it as a fundamental right itself. Thereafter, I explored 3 broad headers:

- "not all choices can be rights"

- "some choices have to be rights"

- "There's need of a balance between choices, rights & responsibilities."

Would UPSC allow such interpretation of the question? Any inputs are appreciated.

- Not all choices can be rights

Did u read the hindi version of essay during exam?

although i didn't attempt that scientific man, romantic man question, I would love to have insights for this essay from the peers who attempted this....kaafi tough lag raha tha ye essay, proper example hi samajh nhi aa the the...read somewhere that Enlightenment is more associated with natural science while romanticism is more closely linked with arts and humanities. aise me toh ye quote humanities ko low pedestal pe rakh raha aur natural science ko high pedestal par...

scientific mean is self explanatory. but its not just man and its not just scientific. it about rationality and logic. and its about countries and leadership being open minded. romanticism is about sensationalisation and being driven by emotions. it has to do with setting goals based on delusions not founded on any rational basis.

russia's invasion on ukraine is based on restoring a lost territory in order to re-establish former ussr.this is bizzare and driven by romantic mindset.

however romanticism is also needed. it provides eenergy for action. eg elon musk going to mars. he wishes to colonize it.

we need to reconcile the two as both are needed. humans have limitless abilities and his thought process is very complex as it is most evolved.

@Capedcrusader1trigger acha kr rhe aap idhar :p

Every language is good and should be respected. Jiska jo mann kre learn, any imposition is wrong.
The bare minimum hindi which helps during travel is present at railway station signboards everywhere. People and places near tourist places in south and other places know that bare minimum to accommodate everyone. So, we should also try to accommodate others grievances.

@MC CullumIts good to take pride in one's culture. But any hyper pride wont do anyone good.

I do have one argument. Southern leaders are very under-represented in Delhi power politics. Just one PM from south. I feel that their reluctance to accommodate Hindi will not let them become mass leaders like Modi etc with a wide support base. Maybe a little Hindi can enable us to see great mass leaders from South as PMs in Delhi in future.Thats my thought. You can disagree.

PS - I respect every language. Lived 2 years in Bangalore. Still regret that I could not learn Kannada. :)

i lived 4 years in bangalore. mixed emotions. halaki i never myself didnt put any effort to learn kannada.

exactly. pehle mera selection ho jaye fir vacancy kam kare dena kyunki downsizing of govt is need of the hour. age limit kam karni chaiye after i get selected. thats why one should avoid giving opinions on such matter. recusal is best unless one is writing a mains answer

last year se comparr karne pe gs4 toh possible nai h, gs 3 me acha gya h but 2-3 q fir aise hain jo out of box hain mere lie but marks achhe likhne se milenge sare likhne se nai. gs 1 last se zaada tough toh h but maine answers frame zaada ache se kie hain, gs 2 me 4/5 the lasst year is saal kam hain jo tough/poor attempt ki category me hain.

overall presentation hi kimg hai

essay- misinterpreted 2nd topic. So can’t say really.
gs1- personally I felt slightly easier than last years( cuz geography was relatively easier, + I’m comfortable in socio questions due to my optional.
gs2- difficult for me, especially 15 markers. Found them vague, wrote whatever I could
gs3- definitely easier than last years. SnT questions gave headache though.
gs4- a very difficult paper indeed( very lengthy). Answer quality is definitely compromised.

optional- slightly better than last time( fingers crossed).

gs 2 i agree with 15marker issue. i attempted 10 markers much better. gs 3 issue basically because of those fe questions only. gs 4 issue is that i cant really guage my performance because i dont remember what i wrote. gut feeling is that 10 markers have been done in haste (1:20) and these 10 markers created a panic due to the size of questions. after giving mocks, i am no more scared of gs 4 but never have i ever seen such huge 10 markers. what followed was panic. but then last year the quality is much bad and also left around 2 10 markers(basically did formality in writing them)

@Capedcrusader1 could u attempt imd , primary rock and deccan and sect question satisfactorily in gs 1 ? French president vs Indian president in gs 2 ? u left 2 in gs 4 last year or this year ?

bro i am doing holistic analysis here. i sat with both previous and this year papers. if this we year we had france and evolution of mcc then last year we had 14th fc,earn while learn, cbi (i didnt justify it holostically). so the issue is have it attempted what i knew well. like for eg i forgot dc wadhwa in governor but then i didnt remember legislative council provision last year. so im doing comparitive analysis.

gs 1 is an exception but insiders say its liberally checked. i knew primary rock but then uske next page me i also included sedimentary and metamorphic because i thought content hi nai h utna. imd is gone for sure. but that is out of competition. even if it is, a certain margin is there

3.2k views
rest is optional and essay. these two have capacity to pull the tally like no other papers. but in today's scenario, gs 1 to 4 cannot be compromised after a limit. and the limit is very narrow. like really narrow

last year two 10 markers were written in absolute haste. bell rung and one ending and other starting. this was the situation , this year paper was over within time. this time all gs papers are completed except gs 2 in which a half of 15 markers is not answered. too much time taken in rpa question. yes this q is also a cause of concern.

@Capedcrusader1 what were your scores in all papers ? if u can share.. and what were your learnings?

i will list the learnings:

- not less than 12 mocks. in case of gs4, not less than 5 mocks.

-dont leave till the end.

-vision test series helped me a lot this time.

-try to replace 365. i replaced it. i didnt lose anything unless james webb and vaccine is given in it (and seems important enough in light of its bulkiness)

-no optional and essay, no selection. plain and simple. last year i practised around 4-5 essays only

will add more learnings as time passes

acha . but despite the kind of checking they do, the 4-5 questions are the ones which are problematic. and this is across gs 1,2,3. i also think it has luck element , i know ppl who say they did well but got less marks. now they may very well be lying

@Capedcrusader1 well every year there are plethora of candidates who feel they did exceptionally well...finished the paper...good handwritting..data..presentation and everything but cud not clear mains... god knows y...even i felt so last to last year

i have an explanation for this. and this is my feeling. if i get an environment q, i often get so excited to write that a well prepared (data basically) answer tends to reach average. i corrected this this time but still couldnt implement it completely. examiner will only view what we show and thats why i feel that even in qs where we low knowledge, simply presentation does the job. my writing surely has improved

wfh couldnt be of much adv to them. tribal is among the best i attempted both this and last year. sects i agree was out of the box. more concerned about geo ppl ability to write near perfect answers in rubber, deccan, wind etc

@Capedcrusader1 I don't think so the optional guys had much advantage. The keywords in the questions were quite general which just  needed 'better' analysis.

  • Socio questions were doable if you have read Indian Society NCERT, did PYQs and followed current affairs 'broadly'.
  • The main problem with Geo questions was that they were quite unexpected (easy questions like primary rock (types and characteristics) made me go blank but however time management helped me attempt that question) plus when I read some Geo questions in the first iteration, my mind went like- "What to write now?" (But again, I had not prepared for Geography that well so that feeling won't be the same for everyone. I had completely relied on revising diagrams and maps during prep. So in the end, I broadly addressed the keywords and drew a labelled map in those rubber plantation and wind energy questions (covered 1-1.5 page). For other questions like ocean currents and straits, I drew 2-3 maps and wrote about keywords with some examples).
  • For the colour-coded IMD question, if you have seen maps in Disaster Manageme nt - the common colours are red, orange, yellow and green- whose meaning doesn't change much. You can just "broadly" write on that with a map showing cyclone prone areas (I made an educated guess here which turned out to be right, I was analysing PYQs (NDMA Reports were asked) so I thought of going one step ahead and ended up skimming through various maps in NDMA reports. I thought that different govt agencies won't colour code maps differently so I ended up mentioning these 4 colours).
  • Deccan traps question is again from understanding of map of India. I was just reading about formation of Gondwana Coal, black soil etc from Wikipedia when I happened to come across this term (it appeared quite frequently). Plus the question was about resource "potential"  so there was scope to write stuff.
  • Troposphere question - I just loaded the whole answers with diagrams and addressed the keywords in few points.

Therefore, I think the paper would have created a huge advantage for the Geo/socio optional people if some "specific keywords" would have been there which are not known by a normal non-Geo/socio optional person. In this paper, I believe everyone has atleast read enough things to address them with relevant "examples" and "keywords".

Note: I am not saying the paper was easy but I think the paper was more about common sense. Even if the socio/Geo optional people had an advantage, it wouldn't more than few marks.

Nothing about  gs 1 was common sense. The geo questions were tough based on my level. I didn’t draw any maps like I did last year as it would seem forced. If I don’t have idea of rubber and Deccan apart from the general idea, I would rather just write with a good presentation. But I felt a clear lack of content. There was no such issue in gs 2 and 3

i reallly hope that they go easy on gs 1 and 2 checking

2.5k views
@Capedcrusader1 There's no denying the fact that the paper was tough. I am just saying that finding "content" for writing answer in GS-I needed common sense.
Tough questions mai thoda content bhi bohot hai. Thoda relevant content bhi hai and uske 2-3 marks bhi agar mil gaye toh bhi it is better than scoring 0. Exact 10/15 marks score karne waala content toh I don't think koi likh bhi paayega real exam mai. It is better to ensure above average content and addressing the keywords rather than chasing the myth of a "perfect" answer. Plus I don't think that kind of perfection could be achieved.

From Forum Mock test feedback, I understood the importance of drawing maps. After analysing PYQs, maps and diagrams ka kaafi scope tha geography mai .. shale gas reserves, sugarcane etc jesi cheeze bohot puchi thhi. Toh exams se pehle maps and diagrams hi sirf karke gaya. I thought that sab kuch nahi toh kuch toh pata ho. "Atleast" map/diagram toh draw karke aau.

Plus this feeling of 'lack of content' will always be there, kitna bhi kyu na padd lo.
GS-2 & 3 were quite good. Kaafi loaded keywords thhe. Scope to write relevant content was high.

Absolutely disagree with many points because my experience is suggesting otherwise. Definitely disagreeing on forcible map drawing aspect. But anyway, my only point is that I could have prepared in a much better way to answer some questions as gs1 is not at all analytical anymore(don’t know when it was last time).

Either one knows an answer and scores good or applies this highly subjective phrase ‘common sense’ and averages out.

3.8k views
All this analysis is only for those 4/5 objective questions of optionals being asked in gs1. Not the other questions which brings ones score to a respectable margin.
3.8k views
@Capedcrusader1 @rockhard What were your  solving strategies w.r.t GS-4 this year?

- case studies will be solved firstly because 10 markers are too complicated and decoding 10 markers will definetly take more than 7 minutes.

-1hour 40 minutes for case studies. i overhauled my writing and presentation part this year wrt last year.

-options available are 4 in my case. ias360 pdf that i saw also has minimum 3 options available. PS: while exploring more options one ma find qualitatively eroded content because of time issue.

-IBC format in all cs and 10 markers

now coming to 10 markers: 1hour 20 minutes.

to be brutally honest, it was such a rush that i have never faced in any mocks. not because im slow in writing but because the shock value of 10 markers was at its peak. decoding the demand of the 10 markers was not easy atleast in first go. in mocks, i usually crack the demand in one go, infact i begin to write while i am reading the question. this had a domino effect on the last 10 markers. since i dont remember an iota of what i have written, i cant say quality is heavily compromised but i dont think by leaving questions, you would gain an upper hand in quality. thats simply not how gs4 is designed(my opinion). these are all my experiences. last year i couldnt complete whole paper as well.

2.7k views

i did not give last year..but yes i have mentioned it before...even i attempted 16.5 in gs 2 in 2020 got 105...completed all questions in gs 4...got 66... that made me think on those lines

Why are you comparing gs 2 with gs 4?

6.3k views
@Capedcrusader1 why can't we ? are marking schemes different...anyways actually it was applicable in my other gs too

Yes gs 2 was leniently checked last year

and gs 4 answer writing is too varied to be marked similarly for all. In gs 4, I have seen toppers copy with paras written in 10 marker . You can’t do that thing in gs 2. Gs 2 is not vague

Does anybody have any experience in marks getting deducted for writing some wrong facts in GS and optional?

For instance, if you know that in previous mains papers, you wrote 1-2 wrong facts but rest is correct, and the marks awarded in such papers were low.

Please share your findings if any.

i think they cut marks. this happened to me last year in gs 2. i wrote a wrong name of commitee in first q itself. despite knowing that gs 2 went good, my score wasnt good. not that it is the only factor, but it is certainly a factor. bluffing or stating wrong facts seem dishonest.

@rockhard  Its true- People who are smartly working hard are more likely to clear, given they have written 'Above average & insightful answers consistently'  on exam day and whose answers were then checked by a reasonable examiner.

Also if anyone is in reserved category then its an added advantage (must be taken if one can). Most of repeaters like me in General category are those who are neither excessively talented, neither excessively lucky and nor have any quota to back us to fulfill above lackings (personal observation 🙂)

I have similar query... Can we leave some parts blank?

We could justify by saying that it was not worth mentioning or that it happened at a very small scale and was long back so I didn’t find it important enough to mention it here. Also I lost my certificates for the leadership / winning medals etc so it’s legitimacy is less

I mean it’s can’t be true that everyone who attends interview will have to win rewards and have to be a leader at some point

Feelings don’t matter in this exam

what’s done is done

as fas as I’m concerned, result aye na aye, zindagi kafi aage bhad chuki hai . Upsc pe kabhi nirbhar nai thi

baki hard work pe chalke luck success se thode samay tak vanchit kar sakta h sara time nai

In UPSC, success can be denied too even if you put all your efforts. There are enough proofs for it . You can say that they have achieved success in other fields. But it's meaningless to compare that success with UPSC preparation years.

cant say i completely agree with the theory that hard work doesnt yield result in upsc. i also think that its time to outgrow these debates. there are somethings one must learn in this journey, one being staying away from debates which produce no result.

not just in upsc cse but in every competitive exam, success is more plausibly determined by number of vacancies than excellence of merit.

chalo its clear that you havent given other exams

arey kuch nai h aise hi sab. tukka sahi baith gya. is baar toh pehle hi group chhod dia main jab inka back to back glat hua. ab group me 2 admin hain jo sahi info dete hain aur unme se ye nahin hain . aur inhone khud ye baat boli h ki main ab nai hu insider. khud bol rahe hain toh hum kyun sir par baithaye

there was a message by a so-called insider on the group. i would sit all day on the group because the info would get deleted in seconds. in that particular message, the info was about checking of gs papers and optional trends. if they cant predict dates, how can they predict optional and gs marks trends and checking leniency

?

if we write all questions in IBC format: and we consider 10 questions well written (50% marka). 4 questions poorly written (30%marks) and rest 6 are average (40%marks) . i also assume equal number for both 10 and 15 marker . ex: 4 poorly written means 2 from 10 marker and 2 from 15 marker. calculation: 5x5+5x7.5+2x3+2x4.5+3x4+3x6=107.5. do check my calculation once. thats why its not advisable to leave any q. even if checking is strict and lets say those 30% reduces to 20% in that case it will be 102.5. again check calculation.

@Neyawn what are your views on these kind of news, kindly provide your witty-insights on this burning

insider scaling issue :)

everytime we call insiders' talk as burning issue, we provide them credibility and publicity. publicity as we all know either good or bad is good.

Ruchira Kamboj ma'am toh full on bhakt mode me aa gyi hain.

Inko quote bhi kiya tha.

jab leadership strong ho to officials and ambassadors bhi fearlessly apna point rakh pate he, bina ye soche ki "West Kya Kahenge"

Aur isko bhakt mode me ana nahi kehte, apni baat ko saaf saaf rakhna kehte he

If you think that talking tough alone, without having the requisite determinants of power [hard or soft] to match that talk, is gonna do wonders for the country, then good for you.

there is no irms for cse ppl. irms bad

Question is not about good or bad.

It's about this year irms 2022 vacancies?  Unga kya hoga?

is saal koi vacancy nai thi cse ke through. as per my small understanding, they were figuring out the process for its recruitment and may have included it in cse list. but the latest notification stands above all as all the consulatations have been done and exam process has been figured out. goodbye those 3 services of CSE :(

@Capedcrusader1 bhai irms ki vacancies  add hui thi badd mein

bhai khud socho. why will they start the process of recruitment of a service erroneously? pib note me toh likha h ki dopt se baat ho gayi

So less seats again from 2023?

bro i am curious why would people expect more vacancies from 2023? i am not talking about you. these were the insider talks on tg group

3.1k views
this is definitely not in favour of those who purely give cse exam. they outrightly lost 3 services. cant say if ese ppl gained 3 because its all restructured for them. but cse ppl definitely lost

Things that I feel will be tough for ese ppl

- handling 2 exams at the same time

- cracking cse pre along with ese pre. They risk losing both. Cracking both are tough

- they will also feel like changing optionals now. Reason: they know that railway is best job through ese and overall irms vacancies are lesser than past year so why waste energy in studying gs for pre, kidht as well change optional and shift to cse

@Capedcrusader1 moreover exam will be simultaneously  taken , mains and prelims

I think fourth and fifth day would be common for cse and irms.

Then it will be final nail in the coffin for them if what you’re saying about matching timelines is correct

reason:

- cse ke 400 paper deke himmat chaiye aur paper dene ke

- mental pressure of 2 exam mains. Exam deke aana aur fod ke aane me antar h

If they have eaten into our vacancies, then it has come at twice the price for them. one, railway vacancies overall tally of 5 ese services is reduced and two, the points we’re discussing about pre and mains and it’s issues

Hi

I gave mains 2022(1st attempt )could not clear it.planning to go for other attempt this year.

I am a bsc graduate (2021)and didn't go for Msc.

This year I also gave DU LLB EXAM and got a seat there. But my familiy conditions aren't not good enough for me to sustain here (upsc)for too long without having a job.I can't appear for other bank exams/ssc exams as i am weak in quant (Took pcb post 10th)and am preparing for my next attempt. So i am planning to give SSC MTS this year even though reviews about it are very bad

If anyone has any idea regarding the job profile of mts?

Or any other exam which i can give ?or job openings which are related to upsc.

I am really stressed as my family's situation is getting worse day by day.

Okay so here are my 2 cents

A person employed as Mts in many deptts, doesn’t even work according to the officially assigned job demand (you many look into the job profile of mts, it’s officially allocated, like any other post). One may search for what an ‘operator’ does or ‘contractual’ ones do.

but that doesn’t mean that Mts will not be asked to do ‘his’ job. Now, once one enters a deptt, the seniors mts work under usually know what’s his ‘deal’, and they will know what’s his plan soon enough.honesty is needed here irrespective of nature of boss. That’s where the question of leniency arises. Again, building rapport with seniors (since Mts as right there at the bottom), is instrumental.

100 baat ki 1 baat , agar complacent hone ke lie Mts lena h toh, mat lo bhai. Not because it’s a ‘lowly’ job by some standards according to some but because someone may genuinely need that job too.

All the variables required after getting the job needed to prepare for the exams further is subject to oneself only.
