@BelieveIT Only time can mend a broken heart. So give it the time it needs.
Meanwhile, what you can do is to get busy. I know its easier said than done but trying to engage your mind in something productive may help reduce the pain.  Best of luck.

Watched the gogoi interview on NDTV. Puked again.

Areey. You wanna feel better seeing gogoi, see Zee Media's interview, you will love him. He is so cute, intelligent and the 'educated elite'.

And guys a recommendation from my side , there is a program by a digital media outlet called newslaundry , named "Newsance", watch it. I think you guys will love it. Its available on YouTube.

God, the way journalistic standards have fallen in our country! Reduced to become mere mouthpieces of a particular political party/ideology they adhere to. Precisely the reason I appreciate the way Srinivasan Jain conducted the interview with the ex CJI. Asking all the right questions that someone had to ask him.

Was watching some of the Newslaundry videos, thanks for the recommendation . Where was it all this while, how am I finding this so late ! They are hilarious, sarcastic while also dealing with some of the pressing issues in media and the world with responsibility which we seek from the mainstream channels.

Believe me I am saying this thing with very zimmedari. But if we look into the history, majority part of journalism has been always like that. And the people we see as exceptions are somewhat part of it. The same has been reiterated by Mark Tully, and Josy Joseph in various forms.

I recommend you to read (if you have time) Feast of Vultures and The Silent Coup, both written by Josy Joseph, for starters.

True, like Ravish like to reminds us, there has never been a golden period of journalism.

Haven't followed politics or mainstream journalism for a while, but couldn't stop getting sucked into this discussion.

I remember some person exhorting students to sever India's North East at an anti CAA protest meeting (don't remember his name. Sharjeel Usmani probably). Watch that video. Then, watch Ravish Kumar's NDTV news story on this incident. He smartly crops the video in the beginning, which entirely changes the essense of that statement.

Then there was Modi's reference to 'Abki baar Trump Sarkaar' at an event with Trump. Hindu, IE, NDTV carried opinion pieces on how this statment threatens bipartisan consensus in US on good relations with India. Yet, anyone who listens to Modi's statement, and is aware of Trump's use of that slogan in 2016 would understand that Modi's statement was in past tense. He wasn't endorsing Trump at all.

My point being, Ravish Kumar, NDTV, Newslaundary (AAP's pimps), etc are competent and manipulative crooks, who are adept at hiding their bias. Those at ZeeNews, IndiaTV, Dainik Jagran etc are incompetent crooks. Their bias is as visible as daylight.

With ZeeNews et al you know you are being served bullcrap. With NDTV et al, you get sucked into the bullcrap they are selling, and form opinions you wouldn't have otherwise formed, if you had access to a neutral primary source.

I contest this idea of neutral primary source. Neutral is news which we use to find and still find in news channels by government of India. Opinions are anyway biased. The question should be degree of biasness.

Does these so called anti modi media channels are so assertive that they create fault lines in society? I don't think so.

On the other hand you see channels like zee news aajtak republic bharat et al they outrightly disrupt the social fabric of the country.

Elections in UP are coming see these channel debates. I am not defending any news channel neither am I displaying my political leaning.

Anyway my point is their potential reach and content does impact how people think and there are handful of people in India who can differentiate agenda of ndtv and agenda of zee news. We are fortunate enough to be one of them others are out there believing corona was spread by muslims.

Agree with you. While it is true that everyone is running their own agendas, and there is no such thing as neutral news, we still need to differentiate with respect to the degree of biases and their impacts on the nation.

Media plays a crucial role in enlightening the common populace of Govt. actions and to critically analyze their consequences for the public. While it is wrong to just keep harping on the negatives, it is still better than eulogizing every govt. action while simultaneously demonizing any opposition to it.

how are u guys covering current affairs?? i was sticking with EPIC magzine and newdpprs but this CBI VS STATE questn in gs ppr 2 was not in it. although vision mnthly for october had it!

1 Newspaper + 1 Monthly Magazine(Vision) + As many revisions as possible.

I occasionally go through websites like DownToEarth, PRS etc. but only if I have free time in schedule.

Regarding State vs CBI, it was in the news so many times this year. It is a repeated issue that pops up every few months. So Epic might have covered it in some earlier month.

Dipin sir classes are more useful for Mains. For Prelims, you'll have to supplement his classes with monthlies.

I haven't taken Santosh sir classes but I've generally heard good reviews of him. He covers the Prelims portion really well. However, it does get really intensive. So join only if you can spare the time.

Can you please tell me the approximate Schedule.  I mean how many days per week and how many hours per day, classes are scheduled?

I checked the website but details are not available.

3-4 days per week. 2-2.5 hrs a class, sometimes more than that. Classes from 5:00pm. Sir gives 2-3 handouts every class. You can print and write on them alongside class. I personally watched them at 2X after the class got over.

P.S.- I joined last year after prelims. No experience other than that!

Thanks.

I checked few lectures on youtube and he does cover content in great depth.

Hi, I’m back again, asking for help 😅

My optional is history but I am rarely able to solve history questions in prelims, especially in 2020’s paper. Should I be employing a different strategy (if yes, then what) or should I just focus on strong points (map based, polity, economy, art and culture) ? Considering that im not too strong in science questions & okay-ish in environment (it’s a gamble), I feel like I should I borrow some strategies from pros here, who score well no matter how hard the paper is.

I usually don’t know questions that can get too factual - Mongolian invasion , subsidiary states, Gandhi’s book/ poem whatever it was, and I think one question was about a city’s significance (?).

Not a pro who can score well no matter how hard the paper is ( not even close) but I do have History as optional and recently finished analyzing this year Prelims Paper.  Some observations:

  • Out of 20 questions in History +Art and Culture, 8 -10 could be solved from basic sources+ elimination itself. Does not matter whether you read Spectrum+ TN Class 11 or Old NCERTs. This includes question on Dholavira, Post-Gupta Period, Mongol Invasion/Vasco De Gama, August 1942, INA Trials etc.
  • Few where 2 options could be eliminated like Chausath Yogini, Burzahom etc.
  • Some questions like Gandhi's book, Mitakshara etc. were supposed to be left alone in my opinion.
  • So one could attempt 12-15 out of 20 simply based on proper revision of standard sources and some presence of mind which seems sufficient to me looking at the cutoffs.

So I don't think there is anything drastic that you need to do in terms of sources from History/A&C questions in prelims. If you struggle with remembering facts, you can try using active recall techniques. Also you can draw rough timelines (not exact dates) of what is happening where in a particular century. This might help in correlating events. For eg, you would have studied that Deva Raya II ruled in mid 15th century under Vijayanagara topic and separately you would have studied Vasco De Gama coming to India at end of 15th century under Arrival of Europeans topic as well. So creating timeline charts may help visualize the entire flow of history and not just events in silos.

@Indian_Human As the name suggests, "lender of last resort" implies a crisis situation. It is sort of emergency credit which RBI extends to a Bank suffering from financial difficulties which may otherwise even collapse.

However, lending to Govt to finance fiscal deficit is a normal function of RBI. It does not imply a crisis situation for the Govt.

Is Forum's Red book for Environment a good substitute for Shankar IAS Book?

Any other suggestions for effectively covering environment portion? Environment section was disastrous for me in the last prelims.

I'm unable to understand how has M0 and M3 been calculated from given data. I hope someone can help here.

@crypto7 , the data is giving growth rate of M0 and M3, not its absolute value.  So all the data points in the table reflect percentage change in respective value from the previous year

Hmm mujhae vhi yahi pata tha bhai

In pyq same asked but in economy by vivek singh mai dai rakhi hai

2015 mai yai change ho gaya hai

Now calculating on nnp at market price

Since 2015, GDP at market prices is being used as measure of income instead of GDP at factor cost. This is what Vivek Singh's book refers to.

However, the term national income simply means income earned by factors of production( ie. land, labour etc.). So you have to subtract indirect taxes which are a part of GDP/NNP at market prices since those go to the Govt and not to the factors of production.

Therefore, NI = NNP(market price) - indirect taxes + subsidies

Or, NI = NNP at factor cost

Csat was tough. First paper attenpted 85. Machines gonna relax. Csat may destroy my mains hopes but machine says feels like its time to move on. I wont say i wont qualify but uts 50-50. If they want clerks/SSC exam aspirants to take over ias/ips/irs/ifs then fine. No wonder cut off fell to 87. Every time a person with 106 in paper 1 doesnt qualify cuz of csat, there is one  csat guy who qualifies.  I think its shame! I am fortunate i can afford to let these three years pass. Its alright. Its okay to not get upsc. There are bigger and better things to do than sit at home and do clerk level/ssc level math! I am a fricking engineer! Would rather prep for CAT if thats the case!

Having a basic level of aptitude seems more important and relevant for a IAS/IPS than knowing a random medieval history fact.

4.5k views
@mithrandir31 i its not basic level. i think those problems can be solved by computers!! I think we have all our priorities wrong! Asking what happens to a guy who comes out of a master and slave! multiplying 60X7X24X60 something! like whats happening!

It is basic level only. The passages are tricky but maths questions are not difficult onsidering that you only need 67/200 . You have to do more questions and much less time in SSC/clerk exams.

I am much more worried about the direction of Paper 1. What exactly does UPSC even want from its candidates?

Think some (5-6) questions (Ancient, Medieval, in particular) are now meant to be left untouched / outright ignored, by design. Anyone who even considers them risks failure in Paper 1 (consume time, still won't get them right).

Definitely. Even with history optional, most of these questions cant be answered.

I hate to say it...but i think csat is clerk level/ssc math which isnt for decision makers! I think sitting at home writing mock tests for such a thing is a shame! i wrote this exam thrice. i think csat is plain stupidity. i think the cutoffs in paper 1 are falling cuz of csat. good people who get 110-115 even 120 arent qualifying!

Why does getting 110 is GS1 become a criteria for being "good people" ? UPSC has given 2 papers in prelims and to qualify you need to satisfy both criteria. Its not about "good people" being unlucky due to difficult CSAT.

What about those people then who don't qualify due to randomness of GS1 despite having excellent answer writing skills?

Random stuff being asked in GS1 is not relevant to being a good civil cervant at all.

Am i the only one thinking that UPSC 2022 was much tougher than 2021? Getting a total of 94 in the best case scenario. 105 in 2021.

It definitely was. Elimination techniques were useless in lots of questions. Factual IR questions would have troubled even experienced aspirants. Besides, polity and economy questions while still being conceptual were not as easy as last year.

Given that, around 4k more people will be qualifying compared to last year, cut off might go below 85 as well.

Kuch log 85 bol rahe hain kuch 90 bol rahe hain kis par bank kiya jaaye kuch samajh nhi aa raha hai bahut tension ho rahi hai feel like doing nothing ,bhukh bhi mar gyi hai

Don't listen to cutoff predictions. If you are getting 80+ marks, start with Mains prep after taking rest of few days.

Irrespective of the result of pre, you should study like you are going to give mains in September. So even if you miss the pre cutoff this time, it will help you in the next attempt.

This is insights survey on expected marks

This is insights survey from last year.(2021)

50% students were scoring above 90 in that survey. Only 37% are scoring above 90 in this survey.

So you can understand which direction the cutoff is likely to move.

I just don't understand how can people accept option 3 in Software as a service question. Arey SaaS is software kiraya pe. Like Office 365 or Adobe illustrator. These heavy softwares are given on rent. It cannot under any circumstances be compared to Gmail. SaaS vocab hi last 7-8y me aaya hai. For eg - if you want to use Adobe Photoshop, rather than downloading, installing, you pay and you use. Heavy software ke rent model ko SaaS kehte hai, not web based mail clients ko. In the name of "ho bhi sakta hai" log D maar rahe hai. But, it is plain wrong.

There is pricing involved in SaaS and mail clients toh 2000 se hai, still why this vocabulary being used now? Office 365 is the perfect example of SaaS. You are using a heavy software online, by paying for it. I think any CS engg would vouch for it.

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/overview/what-is-saas/

Please refer to this article for better understanding of SaaS. Option D is correct in that question

65. With reference to Convertible Bonds, consider pin the following statements :

1.As there is an option to exchange the bond for equity, Convertible Bonds pay a lower rate of interest.

2. The option to convert to equity affords the bondholder a degree of indexation to rising consumer prices.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

(a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2

All the keys are mentioning answer as C. But I have not found a source for the second statement. Can someone please clarify this?

Regarding the wild animals ownership question, this might have been asked because Wildlife Protection Amendment Bill was introduced in 2021 . The bill is now with the standing committee.

One of the key provisions of this bill which is being opposed is that it allows commercial trade of live elephants.

It is important to note that earlier, the transfer, acquisition and receiving of live captive elephants was permitted under the legal provision only with prior approval by the Wild Life Warden but no commercial transaction was allowed. The only way to acquire a captive elephant was through inheritance.

This clarifies that Elephant(a wild animal) can be a property of an individual hence ruling out statement 1. Since statement 3 is already wrong, only Option b can be the correct answer.

@Indomitrix Don't you think you are contradicting yourself in the same statement?
