SFG Level 1 Calendar: https://go.forumias.com/sfg21-calender

SFG – How it works

  • Select Focus Group (SFG) is a small group of students who are selected by ForumIAS every year for coaching them to clear the UPSC Prelims Examination. Every single candidate selected and retained consistently in the group with Top ranks has cleared the Prelims examination in the past.
  • 100 Students will be selected for the Select Focus Group, through the SFG Entrance Test, who will be required to report at 7 AM every day 6 days a week to write an hour-long test based on a pre-planned syllabus, followed by a discussion on the same.
  • Candidates who are unable to make it to the SFG, will be maintained in a Reserve List, who can also write the tests. Candidates who couldn't clear the cutoff and are unable to make it into both SFG and RLG can register for the 2nd Entrance Test
  • Tests are conducted daily and results are provided within 8 hours of test with Name and Rank list for candidates and parents to evaluate their daily performance. On the basis of rankles, about 50% of bottom performing students from SFG are migrated to the reserve list on a weekly basis, and an equal number of students from reserve list (RLG) are moved into SFG.
  • The decision of the management in this regard is final and not subject to dispute. Please note that this migration is done not keeping in mind the overall merit list but moving away bottom 50% from SFG and picking up an equal number of people from RLG.
  • Thus those who may be getting more than RLG students, but are bottom 50 in SFG will be moved to RLG.
  • Every month, the bottom 20% or so non-performing students are eliminated from the program to maintain the quality of competition.
  • All candidates writing the CSE 2021 are eligible to apply for the entrance test.

This year we introduce some changes as to how we conduct the SFG exam. Please note that changes that we bring are always in response to the examination pattern, the student feedback and our own learning with respect to how to best enable a serious candidate to clear the exam

Covid 19 Update:Keeping in mind the Covid situation, SFG – 1 entrance Test and the SFG program will be conducted in the online mode only for the year 2021. SFG – Level 2 may be conducted offline as per government guidelines and this decision will be taken at a later date.

This year SFG will be conducted in two levels as below:

SFG Level 1 (Foundation)

The SFG Level 1 is for beginners, freshers, first-timers, or simply those who have not cleared the Prelims examination ever before. The objective of the SFG Level 1 Program is three things

  • Students know the basic books and basic concepts back and forth
  • Students complete coverage of the syllabus through self-study
  • Students are thorough with previous years papers
  • Students develop the discipline and time management skills that are needed to clear the exam

The SFG Level 1 Tests will have book based / text-based / notes-based tests. By the end of SFG Level 1, you can expect that your coverage of the syllabus is complete, and you have done previous years questions well.

SFG Level 2 (Advanced)

SFG Level 2 is for people who have completed the reading and revision of the basic books and are now ready to take on the exam. The objective of the SFG Level 2 is as below

  • Developing problem-solving skills for solving analytical, conceptual and thought based questions.
  • Developing skills to solve questions based on the application of the reading that they have done for Level 1
  • Mastering the art of handling questions from unknown areas and applying concepts from their wider reading which is relevant for the Civil Services Prelims Examination.
  • Developing time management skills, and being through with the syllabus
  • Providing a reliable, time-bound framework for revision just before the examination.

Current Affairs:

SFG Level 1 will provide coverage of current affairs from January 2020 to November 2020.

SFG Level 2 will have complete current affairs relevant for the Prelims examination 2021 integrated into the course.

CSAT:

CSAT tests will be integrated with SFG Level 2. There will be no CSAT tests in SFG level 1.

Hello there,

The following are the key points mentioned by Ayush sir in today's session (19/08/2020) for Prelims with respect to SFG batch and the strategy for the next 45 days.

  • Study as much as possible now.
  • Only study, eat food & sleep
  • Wake up as early as 2 am
  • Normal approach wont get you anything
  • No social life.
  • Stick to your own source.
  • 3:1 =3 hours for test & 1 hour for revision
  • You can clear prelims in the remaining time.
  • Source minimalism- no new sources.
  • No thinking on Mains at this point of time.
  • Focus only on prelims.
  • Concentrate only on the subject you are doing .
  • Start studying as soon as you wake up.
  • This is the last time i am studying so much.
  • Nap of 20 minutes. Not more than that.
  • May be try Shavasan.
  • 2-3 days plan. Even if i dont finish. I should not extend the deadline, move to another subject.
  • Change sequence of reading. Reverse.
  • Confidence has 50% role in success.
  • Revision is the Key.
  • Dont judge yourself based on scores.
  • Careful reading.
  • No good scores, only improvement is needed in scores.
  • Solve & resolve the same papers.
  • Problem solving mode rather test series mode.
  • Solved - bored - Revise- bored - solved.
  • Be on solving mode - MCQ mode.
  • Solve Previous paper questions.
  • Mind map/ Tables
  • Practise CSAT everyday.
  • Wrongs notes should be scribbled. Not elaborate.
  • Attempt min 85 questions -95 questions.
  • 45 days is more than enough to clear this Exam.
  • Compete with the Best.
  • This is the time to run the fastest.

All the Best guys.

Thanks @Neyawn  Sir :pray::pray:

Just a suggestion !

1)Keep one standard rate @1300/2000 for all.

2)Dont segregate students into SFG or RLG based on Entrance Test.

3) No Churning of bottom 20-30% students from RLG to SFG.

Reason :

1)because we cannot GUARANTEE that some students havent copied in the ENTRANCE test just to get selected in top 100.

2)Similarly we cannot GUARANTEE they WON'T do it in DAILY tests from 15th onwards  based on which  u plan to shift and remove students from SFG or RLG

So the Entrance test and Daily tests would only be Mockery of hardworking students.

(Under current testing pattern.)

Forum IAS just made 29 lakh rupees from an initiative conducted for welfare of students. In three months, it'll turn into around 90 lakhs.

Marginal cost of conducting SFG would hardly be 5 lakh per month. Just had to put it out there.

*drops the mic*

Hello,

We have six things to tell you :)

1) You have been continuously being spiteful towards us. This is unacceptable. Trolls not allowed .  Seriously :)

2) the ForumIAS Group of Companies and her subsidiary and sister concerns in London, New York, Europe , Middle East and West Asia and the Caymen islands will all benefit from this :)

3) You must prepare for CSAT since you are poor with calculations. If you are from IT background, you are likely to not make it to Google , Facebook or Microsoft or Top Technology companies  as you have zero aptitude with solving estimation problems or solving “how many windows are there in New York”. :) Please google it.

4) Assuming your calculations are correct, the huge profits of 85 lakhs made ( 90 lakhs - 5 lakhs cost ) made by the ForumIAS Global and her group of companies in Asia Pacific ( India ) will be hogged by 1) the Govt of India by way of 16 lakhs of indirect tax ( 18% GST ) and 2) 20 lakhs in direct taxes ( 25% corporate tax , which will be conveniently shifted to our Mauritius based entity ;) ;) that’s a double wink ) , 3) Server companies are going to laugh and giggle to the banks making upto 6000 USD in additional revenue in the next three months

, 4) the Payment Gateway such as the HDFC bank will earn a brokerage of about 1.5% on these illegal  shady payments  done via an electronic payment gateway. 5) The landlords of ForumIAS offline Centers which have to be maintained despite business shutdown  laugh their way to banks taking away at least 30 lakhs in rent over the next three months.

5) The remaining billion dollars that the program will bring are likely to be not invested in the country but will be moved to British Virgin Islands :)

6) You are just a troll :) Please avoid any negative propaganda here. :) And focus on studies :) And let others :) Also, please visit the blog.forumias.com and goto Downloads >Previous Years Papers >Prelims and download past years CSAT papers :) We recommend solving  at least five years papers before you come up with second estimates :)

* Giggles in the background from Tax Depts, Landlords, Payment Gateway Companies and Server Companies*

@ForumIAS-Academy  I would like to thank forum for conducting the test smoothly. It was a nice experience. :) Cheating is inevitable in an online process, but those who are cheating are cheating themselves. Todays test was an eye opener and also marks the start of the prelims season :) Thank you for your efforts.

Thank you for the encouragement.  Imagine a  bunch of passionate people sitting behind a computer screen right from a developer to Quiz Maker to a teacher reading your comments. We have to keep things viable.

We always have a choice of doing it or not doing it. We can sit and grumble people will cheat, this will go wrong , that person will abuse.

Some person will hold the whole fourmias academy and even the community hostage because he has paid 500 rupees and now owns us. This gives him the right to say anything or use any adjectives against us.

We try to step back as much as we can.

In the end we decide to have a positive mindset and a positive bias for action.

Hence we do it.

Words are powerful. They can make or break us.

Fellow aspirants, please avoid cheating. If you do cheat, atleast be smart about it. Who gets 100/100? 😂😂

what a complete mockery forumias is doing in name of collecting few 100 for a exam ,they could just give entry to all since its all online now .it has left such a bad taste that i dont think i am giving a single more rupee to these money hoggers. got 111 in 2018 , around 125 in 2019 and here i am in a  200.. rank series among hundreds. looks like forum has collected few hundred ramanujams of india in one place and they knew it even before the exam started.

Please do not use such language against us or anyone else. This is not the culture we want to build here. The SFG sucks a lot of our energy too, and in the end it is a thankless job.

We do it because we see results. Today also we interviewed 4 candidates who are appearing for their first Interview and were in SFG last year and they are taking up the SFG this year too.

We do not want abusive people here because then you will set the bar low for the conversation culture here. It takes effort to build a certain culture. We will prefer to be a small, but study-wise meaningful community. Do not be abusive again - against Forum or against other members.

Forumias had said that there will not be a fee difference for the second month owing to the cheating that is done by many. Why is there difference in fees at renewal now?

Dear Team @FORUM IAS,

Greetings.

Glad to know that you are conducting SFG 2.0 for which I wrote test on 12th July, 2020 and 13th July, 2020. For a moment I checked your basis for separating SFG from RLG. Well! Not so "Thoughtful" distinction.

You have had many flaws just at the start of this program.

  1. Flaws in your test schedule of 12th July. I successfully submitted the test( 'but many could not as server hanged') but I was informed to give the test on 13th July as well. Wait. I was informed around6:00 pm on 13th Julythat even those who have given the test on 12th July are supposed to give on 13th July at 8:00 pmas well. (what if we are out for some reason/could not check email etc.)
  2. No Transparency from Your side. You cannot just blame the students to be truthful and fair. You have got some responsibility too. Moreover "server hanged" when we submitted the test on 13th July as well.(we don't know whether marks we received are fair or not)
  3. Now coming to the Hot Topic of Fee Structure. Yes distinction between SFG and RLG purely on Fee Structure hasno basisat all. There will be dubious activities throughout the test series just to pay"Less amount" for the next month as well. HenceRanking has no meaning. Rank list will not do justice to our performance.
  4. Since there is less time to pay the Fee for SFG 2.0, all requests/feedback will be ignored. But surely this time there is more negative energy against FORUM IAS than ever. This will backfire in future too.

But what can FORUM IAS do now ?

  1. Remove the fee distinctionnow itself and refund those who paid more.
  2. You cancompensate the feefor the next month if you decide it to be the same for everyone. (i.e those who paid more due to RLG can be asked to pay less for the next month.) But You have to inform it to us beforehand.
  3.  Remove the distinctionbetween SFG and RLG . It will surely promote competitiveness.
  4.  You cannot just give excuses such as paying rents, employees' salaries etc. Your sources of Income are way more than us. Put yourself in our shoes.

SFG 1.0 program had more merits than demerits. This time it reversed i.e Demerits outweigh Merits.

When so many people are giving you feedback, you should pay heed to them. It benefits in the longer run.

We all are waiting for your prompt and encouraging response.

Thanks!.

Ankur

Seriously, what is the point of having SFG/RLG, when people are scoring 50 correct? I mean the people who are paying RLG are paying the extra price for not cheating, and being sincere. Infact they get no extra benefits of that extra money, so they might as well cheat too, to stay in SFG.

There are so many cases visible to naked eye where performance drastically jumped between the tests. Did they try "extra" hard?

In my opinion, there should be no differentiation between SFG/RLG. There needs to be a rethink.

PS: SFG selected, and not rlg here, so not saying from disgruntled perspective.

I have nothing against Forum IAS or the SFG initiative.

But, 2360 rs per month for online test is not done. It is in no means - "FAIR". And, the whole idea of segregation and difference in fees based on 'dubious online test' is harsher on those who gave it on their own. This was a major lacunae in your ill thought program.

Also, don't try to portray an institute as "Divine" or indulged in "holy work", the whole of ORN is running rat business and teachers, test series makers, brokers, photocopiers are all just playing their role to get as much money as possible.

All I am asking is from the student's community to unite and ask Forum IAS to lower the fees to 1000 rs for both SFG and RLG. You can take those "300 students who could not make it" to recover your losses.

And I will take you as hostage not because I have paid 500rs but because you earn because of students like me who put their money in your hands.

Unpopular opinion:

I do not think there should be same fees for both SFG and RLG.

- Correlation of fees with marks acts as a motivator.

- if you think that it will surely make people cheat, you are mistaken. It is only partially true. Yes it will make people cheat, but for how long? If anyone of you reading this comment has observed human nature, you would have concluded that this defies logic. You can not/will not cheat to stay in a group for mere questions!!! I mean these questions might even show up in telegram the next day.

- So why would one want to pay (and cheat), when s/he knows s/he will get the questions anyway!?

- in nutshell, only those guys would participate in the tests, who believe in the SPIRIT OF SFG, i.e. self discipline, performance tracking and competition.

- moreover, people complaining about cheating in digital tests, well, what did you expect? We are not even honest with our parents and you expect candidates to be honest while attempting tests? Which utopia do you live in?

- however if@forumiasacademy  analyse the server timings and conclude that the chunk of candidates is huge who have unrealistic timings and scores, they can always avoid grouping candidates just based on the entrance tests. Instead, initially everyone can be a part of one group only and then on the basis of 2-3 weeks’ performances two groups can be formed.

- also@forumiasacademy  could look into disabling right clicks and cut copy pastes. This might help in allaying some fears.

- HOWEVER, if they decide not to do this, we can not do anything as it is a private venture and not Cuba. So please rein your abusive horses.

Past Experience and learnings from SFG:
Pros:
  • Helps you in being disciplined.
  • Helps a lot in completing the syllabus , standard books and current affairs both.
  • You get a lot of practice of giving tests, so that helps in elimination of options as well as devising your own strategy( a very big plus point

Cons:

  • Because of rush of completing the syllabus, sometimes quality is compromised and you just study from test perspective overnight.
  • Revision takes a backseat, as it is very hectic as you can see from schedule no doubt.

So based on my first experience, there are certain changes I have decided to make this time

1. I will not compromise quality of studies just to complete syllabus. At the end , we are preparing for prelims and not SFG.
2. I used to wake up the whole night and study, this really screws up the next day. This time, I am planning on getting adequate sleep even if I'm not able to complete the syllabus.
3. I will take out time for revision because that is very essential, otherwise you forget everything, Either I'll take out time daily or reserve weekends for revision.

All in all, its a good program. It just depends how much effort you put in
All the best
Hope it helps

@forumiasacademy Hi! Just want to know, if possible, Can your team create 3 segments -1. correct answers 2. Marked answers 3. incorrect answers in solution PDF itself. so that, one can (like me, working professional, married one, always short on time) easily open only the incorrect and marked solution segments and take a glance at those questions in a short time. Thank You!
