@tedmosby @LetsGetThisBread @GaryVee When deserving people like you are not in the list, it breaks heart and the success in this exam seems even more elusive. I was expecting your selection as well, have been a silent observant here on this platform since last 3-4 years and have admired your focus, hard work and consistency.
Hope you get the deserving rewards for all the hard work you have put, whether in UPSC or elsewhere.

Thanks for saying this!

Well I am preparing again now. I had already started preparing 3 days post Mains. I was almost done with Analytic Geometry when this result struck.

Though I would need some guidance regarding various aspects in maths opt and some answer writing techniques. Not the syllabus, just the strategy. I am quite well versed in Essay and GS2, I had a score of 126 and 112 respectively in Mains '22. Other scores were - 1: 82, 3: 60, 4: 101 and Opt - 192*.

*I just somehow sat for my opt paper, I did not sleep for an entire night because of tonsillitis.

So if someone has suggestions for improvement, I would really appreciate it.

What did you refer for GS 2?

Syllabus specific personal notes.

@tedmosby Do you know what might have been the reason for the low score for GS3? Were you not able to complete the paper?
Also for GS2 what was your general answer writing strategy? My general approach has been mentioning Articles and Judgements in Polity + Schemes and Specific Examples in Governance + Agreements and Bodies in International Relations. But it has not yielded desired results yet.

What are folks who did not get in planning now? Other than next attempt.

Already working in group B job of GOI.

Will get done with some life processes and events essential for placating society and family.

Fix my mind and attitude.(lot of work to be done here). Probably pick up a hobby which occupies my mind.

Give EO interview.

Examine the score card of 2023 cycle and take decision of ditching optional based on marks. Consequently take the decision of giving 2024 or skip.

@tedmosby

almost same scores in 2022 for essay and gs 2

126 and 110

1: 88

3: 73

4: 93

2023 cycle surely would have improved gs1234

culprit would be optional for me

insider sources also didn’t favour mine

I don't find myself eligible to suggest any strategy. But I have analysed my failure in optional and what needs to be done. Based on that, here are few points:
1. Ayush Gupta(score 296) told that he gave 40-45 mock tests. This ensured no silly mistakes.
2. Shubhankar (AIR11) said that he had solved all PYQs of IAS + IFoS.
3. Self made short notes. I think this ensures comprehensive understanding and also helps in revision. Although for revision, one can refer toppers' short notes. But self made short notes ensure that you have comprehensive understanding of every inch of that topic.

@Ocean_Boulevard Hello Sir/mam, I appeared in this years mains with socio opt, did not make it.  I feel I have to improve in P1 though had enough value addition , it just did not reflect there. So whether should I make notes from sketch or just add in previous one (I had both comprehensive & micro notes). Also I think writing the answer with more scholar look mechanical, and may have backfired. What do you suggest as a way ahead, should i enroll in test series till feb or write PYQ and analysis by myself.

Can someone share some insights as to how to enter the upsc coaching industry and if it is worth pursuing? I have exhausted my attempts....

Point-1. Did not do it properly because I had a lot of non-UPSC academic work (I am in my master's, final year). In retrospect, I believe that papers were still doable.

Point -2: Did not do it for Statics and Dynamics and Mechanics. Paid a very heavy prize. Fun fact- I solved FD and Mech questions which were majorly PYQs but faltered in easy questions in Numerical Analysis.

Point-3: Did all of it.

I have learnt that you can't cut yourself some slack in opt prep. You "have" to do mocks and PYQs mandatorily unless you are a genius. Interview call might either come by sheer fluke and luck or by smart prep. Also I did Gallian for Modern Algebra in those 3 months. A big overkill! Later I couldn't even revise that content!!! I still believe that I have not reached my potential in maths. I have learnt that you should be ready well in advance. You should not leave things for the last moment.

I still believe that I can do it, it's just that one more year and I have very less amount of money left. The future seems uncertain. I do not know how Pre 2024 would be. What if I panic again? What if I fail again? Will sacrificing this much be worth it? Or am I fighting a lost battle?

Thanks a lot@aryabhata for suggestions, I shall improve next time.

Out with Sociology optional. I was expecting at least an interview call this year. Did all the right things post pre 2022 failure. Papers in exam went fine as well ( except optional paper 1, but that also was not too messed up). Was scoring good in mocks. No idea what went so wrong. A close friend of mine committed suicide day before yesterday (Non UPSC friend, was a doctor at safdarjung). Just too much to handle at once. Heart feels very heavy and mind isnt working properly. Have been having anxiety since last 3-4 months.

Slowly trying to get back up, one day at a time. Have decided 2024 will be the last and final attempt.

@LetsGetThisBread Your comments on various threads have been extremely insightful. Hope you nail the next attempt if you plan on giving it or find happiness elsewhere. Best wishes!

Did not do justice to GS last year due to poor recollection. This year created short notes, wrote tests. Revised short notes before every simulation. Revised them before the actual papers. Dipin sir had good words to say this year about me throughout the course which made me feel really good before the papers. In one of the lectures he acknowledged me in class. I made the video of it in my phone camera and used to listen to it everytime I felt low. Being an online student, it was my form of social connect. It helped me stay calm and be confident. I had much better MGP scores this year than 2022.
Made blunders in essay last year (82), joined a crash course this year. Then wrote essay tests to find myself in the Top 10 rankers. The actual essay paper went pretty well. I was particularly happy with my introductions and arguments.
Got 256 in Optional last year and had a very similar attempt this year (Add the extra short notes I made apart from basic intro-conclusion templates which were there from last year; Also had more map entries in Paper 2 than last year i.e. Knew 5 last year, this year 9 (Geography Opt); Much broader and elaborate use of case studies this time)
I was very satisfied with my attempt this time.
I hardly told anyone that I expect to clear. But deep down I was very confident of getting an interview call even in the worst case (Optional getting butchered)
The 0 of 0 and No results found have cut me deep. Never have I been so broken in life than this time. My housing society had its cricket tournament the day after the results. Because I had already committed and had paid the contribution I did not back out after the results. For the first time in my life, I was thinking of something else while playing cricket. For the first time I was sad while holding a bat. Dropped a few catches as well as I was not switched on. My mind kept showing me the pdf.
This exam has taken a huge toll on me. I kept on believing that this was my year. Through all the lows, Through the borderline Prelims score. Through the tough days. Through every morning where I felt I could not do more I kept going.
This one's gonna prick for a really long time. Who says time takes care of things.
What's the point of buying autobiographies of civil servants and reading them if I cannot even clear Mains. Nothing seems to make sense right now.
3 years gone in the bin.

It feels like someone wrote down what’s going on in my heart for last 3 days on loop. I can feel you my friend!!! And no word, no gyaan can heal this. When you give your everything to this exam and find yourself back to the square one.  But the efforts, knowledge and dedication never goes in vain.

Let’s come back with a little more effort, energy and dedication and hope for success in the next shot. It is difficult to start it all over again trust me! I feel the same. But it will surely pay off.

For essay gs124 , I have witnessed increase in marks. If in scorecard , I’m again proven right, I’ll come back and reply on this comment again as I would have gained some credibility by then.

Gs3 I can’t say because marks have been stagnant . 2023 would have seen rise in marks for sure
