3.Modern India - today

4. Newspaper - up to date

Wasn't a good day. Effective study time was lesser than clocked. Figured 3 subjects in a day doesn't work for me. Going to stick with 2. Another goal is to wake up earlier and start studying by 9:00 am from tomorrow.

Completed optional target, hardly studied any modern. Couldn't do WH.

16/11/2021 - Targets

  1. Optional - 2 (1/3)
  2. Modern India - Part 1
  3. Newspaper

Strive for progress, not perfection. Have a nice day :)

Was a better than yesterday.

1. Kind of okay. As expected but, could have done better

2. Modern India - More time spent on optional. So, need to compensate tomorrow

Clearly not on track to achieve my goal of starting at 9 in the morning considering I am still awake at 2.

Should try better tomorrow.

Just sociology today. Did not want to break the flow. Woke up extremely late and clocked about 6 hours which weren't all effective. Usually, would try compensate by studying till late at night. Trying to break the cycle by calling it a day early and starting early tomorrow. Hope I manage to do so. Will update targets for tomorrow in the morning.

Wanted to share this article with you guys..!

Proportion of Indian women delegation at COP26 was overall lower than 169/195 countries that attended..! It was 17% only.. knowing the fact that the proportion was high during COP23 and COP25.

OVERALL..women are underrepresented in most country delegations...! Hope the situation will get better in the coming future..!

Agree. Would like to share something positive I read. A welcome example of the grassroot level change that we keep talking and writing answers about. Recently, the former sarpanch of Piplantri was awarded Padma Shri. This is the Pipalntri village model of Rajasthan which is now an eco-feminist movement.

Every time a girl is born in Piplantri, villagers plant 111 trees – an auspicious number for local Hindus – to both honour her and to regenerate the environment.

Socio Paper 1- some pending notes to be done

Modern India

Happy with my progress in Socio. Finished 2 classes and some note making of Paper I although there is a nagging feeling that I am going too slow.

Did not touch Modern India again :( . As a repentance, whole day for MI and October Monthly (don't spend the whole day on Oct monthly!)

Back to my old schedule and it feels better. If I ever wish to wake up early again, will make sure it is done organically or step by step not a 1 day forced attempt.

Targets - 20/11/2021

1.Modern India (till you cannot look at spectrum and study it anymore for the day)

2.October Monthly (at the max 3 hours)

Thank you to all those who shook me on YPT. It definitely helps. I am late today since I am in my messed up schedule again.

Without commitment, you'll never start. Without consistency, you'll never finish. Keep going, everyone !

Hello ppl, can somone guide , how to revise efficiently so things remain in memory?

When I am revising one thing forgetting other, and when revising other , the third thing and first as well is cleaned out…. and cycle goes on. Also sometimes it feels very boring to study same thing again n again…

guide me anyone? The correct way?

Hello, there isn't any one size fits all approach according to me but, most people vouch for active recall whether it is by using flash cards, Anki, writing tests or just trying to recall what you have studied by concealing a part of your notes and trying to recall the rest. You can check this thread out. There is a detailed discussion on effective study techniques. Hope it helps.

Wasn't a good day for me. I left too much to study till the end of the day and this a pattern I have recognised.  Often leaving things to be done till the last minute when a target is set.

Must finish things early in the day, not waiting to compensate at the end of it. Taking breaks which are longer than necessary is a strict no no, breaks the flow.

Ideally, my sessions of study should be at least 1:30 to 2 before taking a break.

 Specific targets today 21/11/2021:

  1. September Monthly - 30 pages
  2. GS1 Society Note making
  3. Modern India - Themes (257-315), Spectrum till socio-religious, Gov gen
  4. Newspaper as usual

May be a little ambitious but I would like to try.

Just a reminder here :

So, make sure there is a time period allotted for enough revision.

A quote addressing myself : It is not the time to look for excuses.

Have a productive day, everyone :)

The update is that I have fallen sick. Managed to complete some notes because it seemed manageable.

The note making moved at snail's pace which was expected.

Thanks for the nudge on YPT. I gained energy to do something.

Not going to push myself too much till I recover completely.

Will continue notes and study them if possible.

Take care, everyone.

So manysocio peeps peeps here😮. I smell a golden opportunity.

How about we solve the pyqs? 5 questions everyday-6 days for one paper(considering 28 questions).

Everyone can pick one year, either Paper-I or Paper II a/c their convenience. This would ensure impartiality and coherence of effort. It won't matter if you have studied the particular topic or not. You can google the answer for all that matters. The goal is to have a skeleton of points. No need for coherence in format of answers either-It can be pen-paper or one-note or power point for all I care. I can do the extra heavy-lifting to bring the coherence.

We can also do resource-sharing, discussion or anything socio-related. This will hopefully help us a lot with mains in the coming months as we can later peer review etc 😤

We can develop more rules of the game as we go along but बस काम होना चाहिये।

Will make a telegram group for further conversation so we don't hog this space. DM for the link.

Hello, everyone. I am back after a break as I fell sick. Haven't been regular with my meals, skipping breakfast some(read many)times. So, please take care of your health first. Everything else can wait.

Back on YPT full time from now. Do nudge me if found not studying :)

Will update targets once I get my head around what is to be done first. There is too much backlog!

Anyway, hoping for better days ahead.

Also, is anyone using Evernote here? Evernote is creating a 7-8 duplicate copies of any note that I edit. Conflict cannot be the issue since I haven't edited the note from any other device.

I have unsynced one device after which I notice this issue. Have checked evernote community forums but no luck.

Please let me know if you faced this.

Hie. It happens to me as well. Try updating the software if not done already.
In my case, this used to happen when I copy something from the internet and paste it. If that is the case with you as well, try copying that content onto a word or something like. and copy it back to Evernote.
I know, a lengthy and irritating process. But this is what I have arrived at. It works though :)

Thanks for replying . The work around does work :)

Checked that the software was already up to date. The case with me is that this happens when I am on a notes consolidation/ cleaning spree. Copying the whole note into another, merging notes etc. Otherwise, when I copy from internet, never faced this issue.

Guess there isn't any other option but to copy in some other medium and then paste there if this repeats. Evernote has been sitting on this issue for too long. Something this important should have been fixed long ago. Has been a year already.

I'm still using the legacy version because it has been one year and yet no indication of Evernote bringing back tabs. From the limited empirical evidence I have, I don't think Evernote is responsive or consumer sensitive at all :P

I understand why you still use the legacy version. I used it for some time after they updated but gave up since I feared they could remove legacy any time and I would be forced to adapt to everything when I wouldn't be prepared.

We lost a lot of good features with that update last year. Tabs were great. Easy to use. It annoyed me a great deal that the search functionality stopped working within the notebook by default. It would search the whole evernote ! You would need to add a filter every single time to restrict the search to that notebook. Extremely frustrating and I did consider migrating to OneNote. But too much damage already done, would have taken a lot of time and I dropped the plan.  Now, they brought the default search within notebook feature back and I am relieved. Hope they bring tabs back too.

So, the past two days haven't been very productive. Friday was full of me fighting with Evernote because it refused to work. Bright side is I found the root cause and fixed it. If anyone reading this is facing evernote duplicates issue, copy the text and image separately. That would fix the problem.

Yesterday, guests had come over and I was tired by the end of the day. They were nice people, bonus is didn't question my choices or ask me when I am getting married. Rare these days.

Thanks to all those on YPT who nudged me to study. I managed to squeeze in a few hours with your help.

Back to the real deal. I am starting a new challenge today- 10 hours -- 10 days. The goal is to clock 10 hours of study for the next 10 days on YPT. If I manage to finish it, will give myself few hours of guilt free drawing time. Haven't been doing it for so long now.

The targets for 28/11/2021 -- Day 1 of 10 for 10

1. Marx Evernote

2. Modern India Evernote (50%) + Spectrum relating to the themes in the 50%

3. Newspaper

4. September CA - the rest-->30 pages

Have a productive Sunday, everyone. Happy studying !

@Thunderstorm  I can definitely relate to the feeling of what have I done today. I study something and then think do I really remember it ?

Why I am I taking so much time when I thought I could get it done in half the time it took me to complete it eventually.

It is good to vent out what you feel either in writing or call a supportive friend who understands where you are coming from. It helps me a lot, you can give it a try.

I feel lost when I think I haven't done anything tangible. Writing a test helps me get out of it. To see that what you read helps here. So, it is useful and you remember a decent part of it. If you don't, at least you know what you don't know. I still avoid writing tests soon because they scare me and I feel I am never prepared but they are also the best antidote to what have I done questions. Believe me, even if there is a self doubt, what we study helps even if we fail to realise at that moment.

Sorry if none of what I said helped you in anyway. I am sure you will find your rhythm soon and like you said, sometimes we are the only ones who can solve our problems. Just to let you know that it is relatable.

Good luck and hope to see you on YPT soon :)

It was a wonderful excerpt, amazed by the personality he was, the way he communicated and definitely want to read more about him.

I guess I am also in the same phase of days dark and nights darker, but I guess its getting better with time.

I guess when one keeps going, days do start becoming brighter. Each day is a new struggle, mentally and physically. Its same for all of us.

Take your own sweet time, give your mind the rest it deserves, give it time to heal if something's bothering and then get back to work. All the best.

About sharing stuff one thing has been bothering me since a long, want to just share - So after our ex-CJI released his book, saw his interviews. I was astonished by the way he communicated, he was aggressive and offensive, we just don't expect people from such high positions to communicate in this manner. Anyways that's not bothering.

So I decided to read about the sexual harassment case, and not just going by whether the allegations were true or not, what bothered me was the way it was handled. The woman was denied lawyer to represent her, there were no external members, the proceedings taken forward without the participation of the victim and of course the verdict was given. There was just one member who objected to women not being the part and that was Justice D.Y Chandrachud ( he gives me hope, some of his recent judgements are my favourite, I remember smiling once while reading his judgement, as he just gave me hope, that things could be better, can't remember the case though)

The below article mentions that, after refusing advances of the Gogoi, the woman did not ring the bells immediately and at the right time, she did it after her husband and brothers-in-law were were removed from their job. Why were all of that happening at the same time? She removed from her job, then her husband and their her brothers-in-law. What struck to me was that A man's ego was so hurt with that refusal of advances that he had just tried to destroy the life of the powerless woman? If male ego is such deep rooted and seen even in men of that stature and position, being highly educated, then what can we expect from the normal people?

The issues is in conditioning of child, parents refuse things children ask more so if they are men, they think its their right to ask things and get things. When they get a NO, they are not used to it, and then we see what we see all day.

Yeah, too much of ranting, but it was there. I hope we make this place a safe space for women soon!

https://thewire.in/law/supreme-court-justice-sacrifice-sexual-harassment-allegations-ranjan-gogoi

Read this for a better understanding of what I wanted to say.

This discussion compelled me to come back to forum :)

Totally agree with what you have written about Justice Gogoi. The NDTV interview was such an eye opener although it was out there in the open since long time, to see him give voice to it and confirm everything that was said, is shocking.  I think it is fitting that privilege motion has been moved against him in the RS.

Nemo judex in causa sua -No one should be a judge in their own case is one of the basic principles.  Convened a special bench and headed it himself ?How intimidated the woman must have been in those proceedings ? Why does the procedure allow for this to happen even ? No, we are not going into the merits of the case here. The procedure was definitely problematic. Can nothing be questioned because it might undermine the independence of judiciary ?

Join you all in looking at Justice Chandrachud with hope. Whenever I am bored of studying from the book, I listen to his speeches. They are well articulated and sensitive towards the marginalised sections.

An excerpt from one of his speeches -

"The film(The Great Indian Kitchen) charted out the compounding indignities that the bride faced in unpaid and thankless labour that was exerted in domestic chores and cooking. The denial of her ambitions to work a job of her choice, and finally, the harsh isolation and associated untouchability when menstruating. The movie poignantly engaged with the news of the Supreme Court judgment and juxtaposed it with the livid reality of this woman who was not asserting. She was not asserting the right to go on the pilgrimage but was fighting a much deeper battle as her existence was diminished by her gender. This is a stark reminder for how mere legislative or judicial intervention does not automatically upend the inequities that are entrenched in our society."

I would recommend this Malayalam film if you haven't watched it yet. It was so close to reality that I had tears in my eyes in many instances.

@sstarrr The movie was just great. Menstruation part was hitting close home . It is not just the men who play a role in patriarchy, women take the lion's share in continuance of such practices. How many of us would have seen or been taught the notion of pollution during menstruation by mothers, aunts, and grandmothers ? Don't enter the kitchen, don't touch the pickle jars, don't water the plants. Why plants ? Will they die if a menstruating woman waters them? In villages, there is usually a separate unhygienic room for women to stay during periods just like the movie depicted.

Spoke my mind. Looks like we need a Justice Chandrachud fan club here. I learned a new word today , nerd-crush. Count me in if anyone creates it!

Watched the gogoi interview on NDTV. Puked again.

Areey. You wanna feel better seeing gogoi, see Zee Media's interview, you will love him. He is so cute, intelligent and the 'educated elite'.

And guys a recommendation from my side , there is a program by a digital media outlet called newslaundry , named "Newsance", watch it. I think you guys will love it. Its available on YouTube.

God, the way journalistic standards have fallen in our country! Reduced to become mere mouthpieces of a particular political party/ideology they adhere to. Precisely the reason I appreciate the way Srinivasan Jain conducted the interview with the ex CJI. Asking all the right questions that someone had to ask him.

Was watching some of the Newslaundry videos, thanks for the recommendation . Where was it all this while, how am I finding this so late ! They are hilarious, sarcastic while also dealing with some of the pressing issues in media and the world with responsibility which we seek from the mainstream channels.

Yeah, couldn't agree more! We all have in our lifetimes have been subjected to these rules. The rules of purity and pollution are the reason behind discrimination cutting across caste and gender. And you said correctly women have lion's share in deepening patriarchy, but as I said its conditioning and its spread across generation. They act in that way because they have been fed with the similar thoughts, which they pass on to next generation.

The only way this could be countered is by questioning the relevance of it, which in some ways our generation is doing.

I was taken aback by the recent controversy surrounding CBSE english paper. Teenage years are crucial years which help shape our thinking and actions, and then putting such a passage and including an option as "the writer said that in light hearted tone" is so stupid! Already lots of shortcomings in our education system, along with such negligence, what are we aiming at?

The passage meant that 'emancipation of wife in family destroyed parent's authority over child'. "Feminist revolt" reason behind teenagers ruining their lives. Okay!

True, entrenched patriarchy has a major role in perpetuating such practices. Questioning regarding relevance has limitations because many of the things which we do have no rationality. Education, too, sometimes fails to achieve the desired critical thinking. At least, our generation is changing and is hopefully, going to take part in ending or limiting these.

Disappointed with the CBSE question to say the least. The passage does not, in any way, hide the mindset and intentions of the question setter. Yet, some people claim that it can be 'interpreted' in a 'negative way'. Young, impressionable minds having to deal with this amidst worrying about their marks and time they would have spent in trying to make sense of the passage. Sad.

Reminds of the theKintsugi philosophyin which breaks and repairs are treated as part of the object's beauty and history. This traditional Japanese art form mends broken ceramics with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Purposely making the broken cracks visible as part of the object's strength, beauty and history. There should be no attempt to disguise the damage, the point is to render the fault-lines beautiful and strong.  It’s a profoundly poignant idea because we are all in some way broken creatures. It’s not shameful to need repair; a mended bowl is a symbol of hope that we too can be put together again and still be loved despite our evident flaws

Wow,

can you tell what you used to draw? Oil pastels?

Now you have motivated me to draw.

Hey, the medium is soft pastels. It is difficult to blend oil pastels. You can still try with oil pastels too. There are some ways to blend the colours which require some effort though.

I myself was lacking the motivation to draw, good to know that I have motivated you in this way. Will wait for your drawing then! 😄

Wow, never knew you could take such wonderful pictures using Redmi phone camera! My redmi phone cries in pity 😂 Hence proved that skill matters more than the equipment . Awesome!

PHOTOS of the day..( sorry for the watermark but these are some of the photos I took in lockdown..) 🥺🥺

These are unbelievably lovely photos. Did you use the manual mode with different ISO settings or the portrait mode or something else? I can never take a good photo in portrait mode. So I use the basic default mode to take pictures. But they never come out this great. Hats off to your talent.

Adding my contribution to the photography thread :P-

The photos are great, my favourite is the duck. Such a nice click. Do post more of these. :)

Guys, I have a doubt regarding  why is sea/ocean colour blue?

Some sources say it is scattering of blue light, while NASA says it has to do more with absorption than scattering. Water absorbs green, red, yellow spectrum, and so blue is reflected back and that is what we see.

Absorption and scattering are two different phenomena.

What shall we follow?

It is due to scattering of light as explained by Rayleigh scattering.

Before CV Raman's discovery, it was believed that it was due to water reflecting the colour of the sky. Raman explained that water molecules scatter light the same way air molecules do and Rayleigh scattering applies here too.

More explanation here - https://www.myindiamyglory.com/2018/07/12/raman-effect-how-indian-scientist-cv-raman-discovered-why-sea-is-blue/

@Rubi990 Thanks, but it confused me more is it Rayleigh or Raman scattering lol.

No worries. It is Rayleigh scattering. This further led to Raman conducting experiments and the discovery of Raman effect.
