This is an everything thread for all stuff 2022. You can post your daily goals, end-of-the-day updates, weekly targets or any weird thing you use to measure your progress. You can put into words & post the soul-sucking sadness that is threatening to devour you & your productivity. You can write what made your day & let others experience the happiness too, at least vicariously. This is a thread to pick each other up. This is a thread to keep each other accountable. This is a no-judgement zone.

“This is one more piece of advice I have for you: don't get impatient. Even if things are so tangled up you can't do anything, don't get desperate or blow a fuse and start yanking on one particular thread before it's ready to come undone. You have to realize it's going to be a long process and that you'll work on things slowly, one at a time.”
— Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood

How difficult was today's essay paper? Which two questions you would have attempted and how?
People already in the services seeing today's paper be like, acha hua phele hi nikal lia upsc , ye toh na ho pata.
As Naadan Parinda, I too want to get some insights, how would you have addressed these topics.

Haha. Good one. Paper was really tough.
I shared the paper to discuss with one of my friends, and his immediate reaction was, "I think you would've written Q3, isn't it?" They have seen me changing over the past few years. Aur iss saal upsc se break lekar yahi sab to socha hai maine :p
I would've attempted Q3 and 6.
Q3: (The question on wantlessness and materialism.)
I would've started with two opposite phenomena seen in China: Tang ping and 996 work culture. Similarly The Great Resignation and Gig work culture in western countries. I would then raise certain questions associated with such phenomena and try to explain one by one. Then would've gone ahead with ideas of Buddha, Mahavir and Gandhi. Then towards the end, advocating for Middle Path.
Q6: The question on Research
This question reminded me of this video, which I had watched during my College days, to figure out of research is actually my area of research. I would suggest you to watch this.
I'd have started my essay with Left brain meeting right brain. How they support each other in arriving at a logical conclusion and how there's a synergy between the two approaches. Then example of America, the concept of University, the magic factory approach and the idea factory approach etc. I'd also mention ethical dimensions to it. And in conclusion, how India should cultivate it's brilliant minds.
Hi, @Naadan_Parinda and@Jiraiya , happened to brainstorm on one of the section A topics. Feel free to give your inputs. Thanks :)
Your perception of me is a reflection of you; my reaction to you is an awareness of me
Why does perception matter?
- Determines our attitude; provides objectivity
- Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder
- Perception also determines our reaction
How is ones perception one's own reflection?
- For an individual- one's thought process
- For the family - socialisation, values
- For society - state of progress
- For a country - matter of soft power (Middle East perception of women; Taliban's hardline stance causes other nations to not engage with them;)
How is one's reaction an awareness of themselves?
- Situation not under control, but reaction is
- Individual: In life: reaction to an adversity is what defines one's true character
- Times of crisis make you the person you are
- Diamonds are made under pressure
- Laws made by Parl- reaction to the social problem; reflects awareness abt society
- SC- striking down of NJAC; opacity in appointments while advocating democratic principles
- Economic crisis - steps taken
Perception and reaction: incongruence:
- Perception of a woman and stereotyping roles reflection of the society; defying those perceptions- is the reaction of women, reflects their characters; cite examples
- Perception of a delinquent, reflection of the criminal justice system's inadequacy; purpose should be reformaion, rehabilitation; purpose of the criminal institutions gets defeated if criminals are not reformed (more aware of themselves) and become hardened (react
- Perception in IR
- China - border issues (border infiltration while the Chinese Prez happened to be on visit to India - reaction
- Pakistan - surgical strike (reflected courage)
- World wars causes
- Colonialism: the colonialists perception of the colonies is a reflection of them and their narrowmindedness/selfish exploitative nature;
- Perception of the pandemic - dealing with carelessness
- Freedom struggle- stick and carrot strategy of the Britishers; constant repression; divide and rule; non-fulfulment of promises; battled with utmost non violence, satyagraha and truth (Hence, our reaction)
- Environment- the giving nature of environment; constant exploitation- our perception is that it's a free resource to be exploited; it's reaction - always giving; however over exploitation- causes global warming, calamities, shows us our place
- Ashoka - was perceived as the greatest ruler and a relentless conquerer; however post the Kalinga war, he spread the concept of Dhamma (hence, his reaction reflected his character)
- Odisha- perceived as poverty stricken; reaction- Kalia scheme, disaster mitigation of Fani etc
Result of incongruence
- Social disharmony
- Cognitive dissonance
- Migration - society's perception in case of casteism invokes this reaction which is a reflection of their insecurities
- Expand other dimensions
Way forward
- Practising rationality, empathy compassion on an individual level
- Bringing behavioural change via nudge theory, example setting etc
- More progressive laws like Labour reforms in favour of women, judgements like Sabrimala, etc
- Cross border dialogues, disarmament, treaties
Conclusion:
It is only when one changes internally is that one's perception changes
It is only when one is self- aware is when one can control one's reaction
Done with today.

Kindly guide on POLITY AND GOVERNANCE
How difficult was today's essay paper? Which two questions you would have attempted and how?
I would have attempted Q3 of section A.
Starting with the basic needs of a body to survive which accounts for "wants" like food water shelter etc. And impossibility of wantlessness if one has to survive and to live
Quoting Lord Rama, he even wanted things for him to live. Stating about 4 purusharthas, (Artha, Dharma, Kama, Moksha)....to attain the last stage you have to through the previous 4,so wantlessness is utopia.
THEN..to the next part stating that basic needs r necessary but running behind things is running towards a mirage which isn't real and unending. Quoting Plato, Adi Shankaracharya's concept of Maya and Brahman, quoting some recent philosophers and saints like Sadhguru explaining the uselessness of materialism.
Ending with the philosophy of 'MINIMALISM' ,and explaining the same i.e, To have minimal material possessions. etc. And Buddha's Middle path to avoid extremes.

Listen Batman..
Enroll in any test series and try to be in top 10 . Don't make plan and schedule becz we have the liberty to change the plan, schedule etc.. Bt not in test series..
I advice you to try SFG or any other which suits you..

First of all for a while forget everything n take a deep breath
Stop thinking about UPSC n kya hga kese hga ..me kya kr rha hu ....just take it easy
N then just stop looking at a bigger picture n big targets ... syllabus completion
For now u just plan for next hour strt doing dat .....just try to be better than previous hour .....it will take some time but this way things will fall in place ....don't ask for clarity right now ....just forget everything complete small small targets ....u will be sorted on ur own
Baaki if u stay like this n keep thinking about life results kya Krna bla bla ....u will find urself nowhere .....so basically stop being controlled by what you can't control
Just decide small target ...finish it n be happy for present accomplishments
Something is better than nothing
Itna ho jayega toh baaki bhi ho jayega 😀
Feel free to talk :)

These lines are so cliché yet so apt. I mean everytime I go into any crisis of such sort ki itna sara krna ta kuch nhi kia kaise krenge falana dhimkana. I need someone to tell these lines to me. It is not like I don't know or anything even I tell the same things to others. But just listening from someone else at times of confusion has wonderful effects.
